Lac d'Isaby via the Paspich and Pradets waterfalls, starting from Ortiac

Here is another way to reach Lac d’Isaby from Ortiac. Along the way, you will visit the ruins of Saint-Orens Abbey and the Paspich and Pradets waterfalls before reaching Lac d’Isaby and climbing up to the Cabane Picourlet.

Description of the walk

After Villelongue, continue towards Ortiac along a winding, very narrow road with few places where vehicles can pass each other. Drive through this small hamlet along a mix of road and track until you reach, at the edge of the woods, an area that can be used as a car park. If parked neatly, five to six cars can fit. Please note that this spot is very popular. If it is full, turn back and try to park 900 m further back, next to the Ortiac chapel.

(S/E) Head east and follow the track uphill for about 200 m.

(1) When the track bends sharply to the right, leave it and take a path on the left that descends steeply. Cross the Ruisseau d’Isaby and climb up the opposite side. Then turn right to reach the ruins of Saint-Orens Abbey.

(2) Leave the ruins on your right and continue the climb towards Lac d’Isaby, heading east but with a few bends.

(3) Join the track you left at the start of the walk, follow it as it continues (due east) and pass the hamlet of La Prade. Continue following the Ruisseau d'Isaby upstream for about 550 m.

(4) Turn off to the right to climb up to the beautiful Paspich Waterfall.

(5) Return to the main track.

(4) Follow the track to the right (when returning from the waterfall). Continue the ascent heading east-northeast then north-east to a viewpoint overlooking the Cascade du Pradets, below on the left.

(6) Continue the climb along the track, heading north-east then east. After a long walk, you will reach a small, unnamed lake.

(7) Then turn left, head south-east and reach Lac d’Isaby (a good spot for a break).

(8) For those who wish, turn left (north-east) and climb up to the Cabane Picourlet (an extra effort recommended for shelter in bad weather).

(9) Return via the same route, in the opposite direction, to the car park at the start (S/E).

We chose to take the forest path to the plateau on the way there and return via the ruined abbey of Saint Orens. There were few people on this hike apart from at Lake Isaby. People coming from Hautacam.

A very pleasant hike in the forest with a very clear path that is impossible to miss.
A lovely arrival between two mountain slopes with the Hautacam resort just above

A hike undertaken after a snowfall and in fine weather. Brilliant. The path is well signposted and then easy to follow.
