Description of the walk

Park your car in the car park situated just before the Col de Larche, about 1 km from the Ubaye Valley.

(S) Take the path heading towards the Lacs de l’Orrenaye and Roburent.
The path climbs steeply.

(1) You’ll pass near the source of the Pains Bouillis.

(2) Once you reach the plateau, you have two options.
Either follow the signposted path (yellow and red), or turn right (there is a red and yellow marker cross).
You must continue along the marked path.

(3) When you reach the junction where you can rejoin theGRP® Tour du Chambeyron, leave the path and head towards the metal structure slightly further up.
Carry on straight ahead across the slopes until you reach a small plateau.

(4) Take the track slightly to the left on the slope.

(5) Once you have climbed the short steep section, join the path coming from Lac de l’Orrenaye. To do this, you must first head straight towards the ridge, following a hollow; then, when the hollow fades away, turn right to rejoin the path that crosses the scree slope.

(6) Once on the path, turn left towards the Col du Bœuf.

(7) After the pass, descend on the Italian side via the winding path to the small lake ‘Delle Munie’.

(8) When we were hiking there, there was a herd of cows by this lake, so we veered slightly to the right at the foot of the slope.

(9) Join the path leading to Lake Apsoi.

(10) We had a picnic by the lake.
Head back along the path we came up on.

(11) Once you reach Lac delle Munie, carry on straight ahead towards the Col des Monges.

(12) At the pass, head back down, following theGRP® “Tour du Soubeyran”.

(13) A section overlooking Lac de la Montagnette.

(14) Carry on to the left towards the Larche Valley until you reach the signpost for the Tête Dure and the Col de la Gipière.

(15) Follow this direction until you reach a mountain hut.

(16) Turn right towards Tête Dure.
The path winds its way up through the rocky terrain (follow the yellow markings), eventually reaching the Col de Rémy after passing a few slightly slippery stony sections.

(17) At the pass, either head towards the Tête Dure by continuing along the path. This will then swing round to join the track.
For our part, we cut straight across the slope, heading for the hut and the track visible from the pass.

(18) Once at the hut, take the track on your left, which will lead you back to your starting point (E). (Those who have climbed the Tête Dure will arrive from the right).

Notes

Take the usual essentials for a mountain hike:
-> food and drink,
-> protection from the weather (sun, rain, wind, cold).

Mobile phone reception is poor once you’ve left the car park.
It’s therefore safer to go in a group, as you won’t be able to make a call if anything goes wrong.

On the way down from the Col du Boeuf, we came across a herd of cows.
There were no sheepdogs in sight that day, but it’s best to be cautious.

There’s a campsite right next to Lake Apsoi, the “Bivacco Bonelli”.

Worth a visit

At Lake Apsoi, you can head past the refuge to the overhang to admire Lake Visaisa.

Around the lake, on the Col du Boeuf side, there’s quite a lot of barbed wire (remnants of the Second World War?) on the raised section overlooking Lake Apsoi, so be careful where you step off the path.

As you descend from the Col des Monges, you’ll see the Viraysse battery opposite you, overlooking Larche and its valley.

At point 3, we had difficulty finding the path leading up to the Col du Boeuf. We couldn’t see any metal structures further up. So we headed straight up the slope and then turned right until we finally found the path leading up to the Col du Boeuf. But looking back, I think we should rather have gone up the left-hand side of the slope at the junction (3) where the signposts are, and then followed the cairns.
The climb is quite gruelling over the scree and through a very rocky landscape, but the descent path on the Italian side towards Lake Apsoi is, on the other hand, well marked all the way down.
We camped in tents by Lake Apsoi in a beautiful setting: there were only two groups of us. The Bonnelli bivouac, however, was full.
We didn’t follow the suggested route as I wanted to go via the Col d’Enchiausa (challenging) and the Col de Feuillas to reach Lake Roburent (splendid).- However, the Feuillas Pass is difficult, very exposed and dangerous, as the path crumbles in places and becomes very narrow; I would advise against taking this pass.
I’ll certainly be back to do the section via the Col des Monges, as the scenery I saw around Lake Apsoi was absolutely stunning.

From the Col du Bœuf, we decided to follow the ridge to the Tête Villadel, where the 360° panorama is spectacular.
Many thanks to the author for this lovely route.

For local enthusiasts, via the Col de Feuillas and then the Col de Scaletta, it is also possible to do a lovely circular hike on the Italian side, returning to Lake Roburent. The hike is quite long with a significant elevation gain.
It can be shortened by taking the R. Cavallero path, which takes you closer to some of the fortifications.
I haven’t taken this path myself yet, but for anyone interested in the circular route, I can send you a few details via private message (distance, duration, elevation gain, etc.)

In fact, two hikes on this route: 21 August 2012 and 26 September 2013, completing a full route of the Tête de Moïse via the Col du Bœuf, Lac d’Apsoï, the Col d’Enchiausa (2,740 m) and the Col de Feuillas (2,741 m) – both ways.
Tough days: ± 1,530 m of elevation gain, but superb hikes.
