Labbeville from Valmondois via Le Sausseron and the fields

The Oise region was a favourite haunt of the Impressionist painters. You’ll quickly see why as this route winds its way through fields of grass and the green Sausseron valley. The outward leg is entirely in the open until you reach Labbeville. The return journey will be in the shade as you pass through Nesles-la-Vallée and Valmondois. History buffs will be in their element with the presence of castles, mills, churches and, of course, the old railway line between Labbeville and Valmondois

Description of the walk

(S/E) From Valmondois station, follow the railway line northwards and take the first street on the left. Turn left again at the next two junctions.

(1) For the return journey, ignore the path branching off to the right and stay on Rue de la Division Leclerc. Follow the street to its end, passing Place Abbé Théo Mettes and the church of Butry-sur-Oise. At the end of the street, continue straight ahead. Stay on the same street until the stop sign at the town hall and turn right onto the D4 towards Parmain.

(2) Take the first left, Rue de la Cavée. The street climbs gently and offers views of the Butry-sur-Oise and Mériel area. Keep right at the next two junctions until you reach the cemetery. Just as you reach the cemetery, ignore the first track branching off to the right which runs alongside it.

(3) Take the second track starting on the right after the cemetery. This marks the start of a long stretch through the grasslands with views stretching into the distance, particularly over the Montmorency Forest and the Isle-Adam Forest, as well as the hills towards Parmain. Take the first track on the left, which climbs slightly. Ignore the first track on the right, then the next one coming from the left.

(4) Take the next track on the left. Follow it to the next junction and take the track on the right. After a long straight stretch with views over the village of Hérouville, join a road and follow it to the right.

(5) Take the first track on the left, which runs alongside the Bois de Gérofay and also winds through the grasslands with remarkable views of the surrounding area. Stay on this track until the next road (D79).

(6) Cross this road and continue along a track at Petit Clos. Turn onto the first track on the left, then onto the first track on the right.

(7) Ignore theGR® coming from the left and keep to the right before making a 90° turn. Pass in front of the Bosquet. At the end of the track, you’ll reach the Croix Bastard.

(8) Turn right onto a tarmac road. Stay on this road until you reach a power station.

(9) Then turn left towards Labbeville onto a gently sloping track. Follow this until it turns into a path. Turn right onto the first track and continue to a statue of the Virgin Mary and a remarkable viewpoint over the Sausseron valley and Labbeville.
Then retrace your steps to the previous junction and turn right onto the road towards Labbeville. Stay on the same path until you reach the church.

(10) At the junction by the church, turn left then take the first right to pass in front of Labbeville Castle. Turn right again at the end of the street. Continue straight on at the next junction, turn right at the following one, then left at the third junction and straight on at the fourth. Then stay on the street until it ends

(11) Turn left onto the D64 towards Nesles-la-Vallée.

(12) Turn onto the first road on the left, then take the first track on the right, which then becomes a path: stay on this path until it ends. This marks the start of a long stretch along the old railway line from Labbeville to Valmondois. You will stay on this railway line all the way to Valmondois. It is now used as a cycle path.

(13) Turn left. Follow the road to the church at Nesles-la-Vallée, situated directly opposite a dovecote in a barn.

(14) Then retrace your steps.

(13) Turn left onto a lane running alongside the Sausseron on the right bank. Then keep left on the cycle path towards Valmondois.

(15) Cross a main road again and turn left onto it, heading towards the Sausseron and its wash house. Then return to the same junction and turn left onto a path that quickly becomes a shaded cycle path.

This path then takes a wide right-hand bend before reaching a barrier: follow the path which continues beyond the barrier to reach yet another main road.

(16) Continue straight ahead. The path will then cross two lanes: continue straight ahead on the same path.

(17) At the third junction, turn left, follow the road to Moulin Burgaud and then return to this same junction to continue left onto the cycle path. This leads to a road which you will need to cross and continue straight ahead onto the cycle path. This then runs alongside the main road for a short while before quickly veering away at the next junction and continuing straight ahead.

(18) Cross the A-road and continue straight ahead.

(19) Cross the main road again. Continue straight on until you reach Rue de la Division Leclerc.

(1) Return via the reverse route to the station (S/E).

The first section from (3) to (9) is very, very, very long; you walk through fields stretching as far as the eye can see. However, it can be quite nice if you’re just looking for a stroll.

After that, it’s a straight stretch to the station, which is more pleasant and gives a real sense of the region’s atmosphere.

I just made one change at point 11; I didn’t take the road as there’s a cycle path just before it which is much safer and quieter, so I don’t see the point in taking the road with all the cars.

The walk through the fields is quite long and a bit monotonous
it’s still lovely, though

I set off on the hike from Auvers-sur-Oise, passing through the beautiful Ravine des Trois Vallées to reach point 5.
Between point 5 and point 9, the route seems endless. The second section is more pleasant and varied.
However, there are few places pleasant enough to stop for a rest, apart from at the foot of the statue of the Virgin just before reaching Labbevile, or in the final section at the Maison de la Meunerie or the Maison Daumier in Valmondois...

A walk that presents no difficulty whatsoever.
The first section, up to Labbeville, offers little or no interest: you walk through a monotonous, dusty landscape of fields stretching as far as the eye can see, the route punctuated simply by crossings of straight roads.
The route becomes interesting from the beautiful viewpoint at La Vierge just before Labbeville. After that, there is a bucolic landscape, with water and pretty villages.
It is well worth replacing the first section with a detour along the banks of the Oise; the walk there is very pleasant.
