The Cance Valley starting from Talencieux

This hike will take you to the Cance Valley, where beautiful wild landscapes await you.
You will need to descend into the Cance Valley, the Combes Druisseau de la Goueille, de la Manoha and the Pralong stream. And of course, you will need to climb back up, which makes this hike varied and challenging at the same time.
You will learn a little history as you pass by the ruins of Oriol Castle.

(Please read the practical information section for a warning about a landslide on this route.)

Description of the walk

Go to the village of Talencieux and park in the car park by the church and town hall.

(S/E) The hike starts at the bottom of the car park near the war memorial. With the church behind you, take the street lined with two stone walls (Rue de la Victoire) towards the small streets of the village, continuing straight ahead. When you reach an intersection, turn left onto Rue Centrale. Continue straight ahead on Rue des Vignes to reach a crossroads with a cross.

At this crossroads, keep to your right; you are now on theGRP® Tour du Bassin d'Annonay, marked in yellow and red. Follow these markings. You will come to a fork where there is another cross.

(1) You have a choice: either take the path on your left marked in yellow and red (route choice) or turn right onto a slightly more rural path. These two paths meet at a crossroads where you will find another cross. Continue on theGRP®, crossing the village of Balais. At a crossroads, you will find a hiking signpost.

(2) Turn left towards Lac de Vert.

(3) Here, too, you will find a hiking signpost.
Still following the signs, turn left, pass by the lake and then onto its dyke. At the end of the lake path, turn right into Rue du Suc de Buis. Go straight through the village of Vert and, at the exit, turn left, ignoring the straight ahead direction. You will soon come to another crossroads.

(4) Turn right, ignoring the path that goes straight ahead. Cross the hamlet of Peuclat and you will come to a right-angled crossroads with a hiking signpost.

(5) Take the road on the left and follow it to enter the hamlet of Tourtel.

(6) Several roads intersect in the hamlet. Stay on theGRP® trail to descend towards La Cance and cross the river via the stone bridge at Tourtel. You will then begin an easy climb. After a hairpin bend to the right, you will reach a trail junction.

(7) Leave theGRP® here and take the unmarked path downhill to the left. Be careful here: the first few metres of the path are not shown on the IGN map. Continue along a hairpin bend to the left and descend into the valley.

(8) Ford the Ruisseau de la Goueille stream. Take the path opposite, which climbs steeply. Stay on this path, ignoring any paths branching off to the right or left. You will reach the Ruisseau de Monoha stream.

(9) Be careful not to miss the narrow path that you take to the left downhill. It is not very visible at first and it is easy to miss. Ford the Ruisseau de Manoha again. At the next fork, turn left again to cross the Ruisseau de Pralong.

At the next intersection, ignore the path that descends to the left and stay on the right. The uphill path joins another beautiful path, which you take to the left. Then, ignore the paths and roads that branch off to the right and left and stay on the main path until you reach the tarmac road to Cormes.

(10) Take this road on the left and then, at the next intersection, turn right. Cross the top of the hamlet of Bruas. Just after crossing the hamlet of Bruas, leave the tarmac road and take the dirt track on the left. At the end of this track, turn right onto the tarmac road for about 100 metres and at the first intersection take the dirt track on the right. Continue straight ahead on this track, ignoring a track branching off to the left. Continue to an intersection where there is a cross.

(11) Cross the tarmac road and continue along the dirt track opposite, which passes close to Pestrain Castle. Continue along this downhill track until you reach the Tour d'Oriol. Turn left onto the yellow and white marked track to go uphill.

Across the path is a half-wood, half-wire fence. It is not locked, so you can pass through and close it behind you. Further on, you will come to a tarmac road on a bend, where you take the Beauvoir road opposite.

(12) Leave the tarmac road and take a dirt track on the right. Continue along this uphill track until you reach the hamlet of Masse.

(13) Turn right onto Chemin des Montaillières. Continue to the crossroads with Route des Combes.

(14) Cross the road and continue straight ahead in a north-easterly direction. You will reach the crossroads with the road leading to the hamlet of Les Fromentaux.

(15) Leave the tarmac road and take the dirt track that descends opposite. Ignore the paths that branch off to the right and left and continue straight ahead downhill. The path then descends more and more, winding its way down to the bottom of the valley and the submersible bridge over the Cance.

(16) Cross the bridge and continue on the other bank to reach the Cance Gorge road. Cross over to take the wide path that starts almost opposite and slightly to the right uphill. Continue climbing through the Tailla ravine in the undergrowth until you reach the first intersection, where you turn right. You will soon reach a second intersection where you turn left to finish the climb.

(17) Turn left onto the wide, clear path. Ignore a path on your right and join a tarmac road called Rue des Rameaux. Continue along this road until you reach the junction with the Route de Sarras (D370B), where you turn left.

Continue along this road until you reach the car park at Talencieux church (S/E).

Notes

From (9), the hike mostly follows paved roads. For those who love dirt paths through the woods, this may seem a little less enjoyable, but it is a necessary part of completing a circular hike as there are not many other paths.

After (12), the trail returns to dirt tracks through the woods.
The hike includes some fairly steep climbs, especially in the second half, which make it quite challenging.

(Warning)
In early June 2021, I noticed that a landslide between points (9) and (10), just before crossing the Pralong stream, makes it very difficult to pass between the fallen trees. This remark will be removed when the path is cleared. In the meantime, I advise those who still wish to do this route to exercise extreme caution in this section.

Worth a visit

Between (5) and (6) Tourtel Bridge over the Cance.
Between (10) and (11) Ruins of the Oriol tower, remains of an ancient fortified castle (ruins in very poor condition).

A lovely route enjoyed under the February sun, with a wide variety of paths and roads (no traffic). Using GPS is very useful, especially near stream crossings.

We went on this beautiful hike on a lovely winter Sunday and were delighted with this challenging route.
Everything went very well until we left the beautiful path climbing from Tourtel to Quintenas. After the tricky and somewhat acrobatic crossing of the Goueille, an impressive little river with a fast current, everything became very difficult. The description is not precise enough, and we recognise that it is not easy because there are many paths and it is never obvious which one is the main one. We got lost, lengthened the route considerably, and only found our way back on the outskirtsof Ardoix.
Despite everything, we returned home satisfied and happy to have completed this beautiful route.

Beautiful hike, very varied landscape, but be careful between points 8 and 9 as there are numerous trees across the path (about ten) that you have to climb over. The last climb is quite physically demanding. I would describe this hike as a little difficult. Note that we cross other recorded hikes, particularly towards ARDOIX between points 11 and 12 at LA TOUR D ORIOL.

I completed this circular hike in 3½ hours, walking quickly and without taking any breaks.
I did this hike in the opposite direction.
A small problem for those who did it in the right direction from the bridge.
I didn't have any because I used the bridge as a landmark.
The tarmac is extremely unpleasant when it's hot, but at this time of year, the tarmac isn't a problem.
I do not recommend this hike in hot weather.

This hike includes many sections on roads, which is a shame.
The route between 8 and 9 is quite complex and you have to be careful because there are many paths to cross. However, it is possible to find your way, but you have to be very vigilant. If you have a GPS, it will be very useful. The trees that were blocking the path have been cut down, so there are no more problems on that front.
The difficult rating is only justified by the difficulty of the route, as physically there are no problems.

Far too much tarmac at the start of the route. The section through the woods is very pleasant, but once you leave the marked trail, it's easy to get lost and there's no internet connection. We turned back before reaching point 9 because the trail was very obstructed by trees uprooted by the November snow. It was more like climbing than hiking, progress was very slow and not very pleasant. We won't be doing this hike again. There are nicer trails in this part of the Ardèche.

A very nice hike. We especially liked the second part, which is much wilder with undergrowth and streams. However, I found it a bit of a shame that there was so much walking on tarmac. We had a picnic by the Gouielle stream (about halfway along the route). It was very pleasant.
I can confirm that the section in the undergrowth between points 8 and 9 is complicated because there are lots of different paths that are not listed in the description or on the maps. In fact, we got lost there several times. However, it wasn't unpleasant because this section of undergrowth is really very pretty. On the other hand, it did make the hike considerably longer.
Thank you to the editors of this hike!

A very beautiful hike with varied landscapes, forests, vineyards... View of the Rhône when we are on the heights. The footbridge over the Goueille stream had been washed away, but we were able to cross easily without getting our feet wet. Between points 7 and 8, the path was difficult and challenging because many trees had fallen across it. The final climb after crossing the submersible bridge over the Cance was quite steep but shaded. We will do it again in the opposite direction.

I did the route in reverse to finish more gently on flat ground and do the climbs at the start of the route.
The passage at point 8 of the Goueille stream was tricky (as it always is when I go there), without wanting to take off my shoes: I tried to use the makeshift footbridge but ended up slipping and falling in, so I went back upstream to balance on mossy, slippery rocks!
Between points 8 and 9, the route is a little unclear as there are a number of trails of varying importance, so I navigated using my GPS.
The walk is worth it for its diversity: forests, vineyards, streams, hamlets.
I know the area, but it's always nice to follow a slightly different route.
