Roche Péréandre route starting from Thorrenc

Hike in the Cance Valley. Crossing small bridges over the river, you will arrive at Roche Péréandre, which I am sure will amaze you if you have never seen it before.
Your adventurous spirit will lead you through the old railway tunnel and over the Thorrenc viaduct without hesitation.

Description of the walk

Go to the centre of the small village of Thorrenc and park near the Thorrenc inn.

(S/E) Head towards the climb up to Thorrenc Castle and make your way to the small cemetery via Rue du Cimetière. Take the path uphill on the right. It is marked in yellow and red and is theGRP® (long-distance footpath) of the Tour du Bassin d'Annonay. A sign indicates the Chemin des 3 Ruisseaux (Path of the 3 Streams).
You will come to a hiking signpost.

(1) Turn left. This is also the path up to the water tower.
You will come to a tarmac road. Continue straight ahead along this road, ignoring the roads leading off to the right.
You will arrive at a crossroads where a hiking sign indicates several directions. Take the right-hand path, leaving the yellow and red marked trail.
Cross the hamlet of Ozas via the Ozas road. Stay on this road, ignoring any roads branching off to the right or left. At the hamlet of Les Grands Prés, you will come to a crossroads with a dirt track.

(2) Leave the tarmac road and take this path on the left. Cross the D370 road and continue along the dirt track opposite. Join theGRP® after passing under the power line. Take it on the right to reach Lac de Vert.

(3) Stay on theGRP®, which is always marked in yellow and red. Cross the hamlet of Vert. Pass the crossroads at the hamlet of Peuclat and you will come to another crossroads at a right angle.

(4) Continue left on theGRP® and head south to reach the hamlet of Tourtel. Keep following the red and yellow markings to reach the bridge over the Cance.

(5) Cross this stone bridge over the river. Continue on the other bank along the marked path.
After following the Cance, the path makes a hairpin bend and starts to climb.
Continue uphill, following the markings, until you reach a flat section of the trail.
Pass under the power line. Continue to the crossroads of the path leading to the hamlet of Seytenas.

(6) Leave the marked path and take the path on the right towards the hamlet. At the hamlet, turn left onto the tarmac road to Seytenas to reach a four-way crossroads further on.

(7) Turn right. At this point, a red sign indicates the direction of Moulin de la Cance. Follow this direction. Go around the houses of Eyguèze. Take the road on the left to avoid Lachaud and reach a new crossroads at the hamlet of Les Combes.

(8) Turn right, go around Les Combes on the left and wind your way through the forest to reach the suspension bridge over the river.

(9) Cross the bridge and climb up to the right towards the tarmac road, following the path made up of a few spaced stone steps.
Follow the tarmac road on the left to reach Roche Péréandre.

(10) Continue along the tarmac road for a few dozen metres (altitude 269). Then take the path on the right which starts with a hairpin bend. This path is marked in white and yellow.
The path winds uphill until it reaches the village of Vernosc-lès-Annonay

(11) Cross the village straight ahead, passing the church on your left.
On Rue d'Abraham, just before passing the school, take a path on the left lined with low stone walls. At the end of the path, first turn left then right at a right angle, then a few metres further on, turn right again at a right angle to walk alongside some small residential buildings.

(12) When you reach the road, turn right onto Route de la Gare. After a few dozen metres, the road curves to the left. Continue straight ahead, ignoring a road that branches off to the right, until you reach a crossroads with several roads.
Take the middle road (2nd on the right).
After passing a farm, the road ends at a path that crosses a wide, straight track. This is the old railway line.

(13) Take this track to the left for just a few metres, then turn right downhill, passing a small pumping station.
Follow the path, which is not very well marked at first, and go straight up the hill to reach the hamlet of Midon. Cross it via Rue des Grandes Vignes and continue straight ahead. Join the D370 road, taking care when crossing as it is very busy.
Continue along the dirt track opposite. You will reach a crossroads shortly before the power line.

(14) Turn left along a vineyard. At the end of the vineyard, the path narrows as it turns right under the power line, then a few metres later begins a short descent to reach the bridge over a stream.

(15) Cross the bridge and climb up opposite towards the houses of the hamlet of Révèlardon. Cross the hamlet. When you reach a crossroads, turn right and follow the sign for "chemin des trois ruisseaux" (three streams path), then turn right again onto the path leading downhill. After a few metres, keep to the left, ignoring the path that branches off to the right.

(16). Cross the old railway line via a bridge and continue on the left side of the bridge along the downhill path. After a few dozen metres, you will see a very steep path branching off to your left. Take this path and after a few metres you will find yourself on the old railway line on a first viaduct. Continue along the old railway line to quickly reach the Thorrenc railway tunnel.
Cross the tunnel, following the recommendations in the Practical Information section.
After passing through the tunnel, cross the Thorenc viaduct. After crossing the viaduct, be careful not to miss a faint path that branches off to the left and gradually moves away from the railway line. This will allow you to easily leave the railway line. Continue along this path, passing a red painted barrier, to reach a tarmac road. Follow this for a few metres, then turn right to rejoin theGRP® Tour du Bassin d'Annonay, crossing another bridge over the old railway line.

(17) Follow this path until you reach the car park in the village of Thorrenc (S/E).

Notes

Between (S/E) and (1). The hike does not pass close to the castle, but you can take a short detour from the route to see this medieval castle up close and then return to the hiking trail. Bring a headlamp or torch (essential).

(10) At La Roche Péréandre, benches and a picnic table below the road invite you to take a short break to admire this natural wonder.

Between (16) and (17). Thorenc Tunnel: put on your headlamp or torch and cross the tunnel, passing the barrier designed to prevent motor vehicles from passing through. The tunnel is not very long, but it is completely dark at the beginning. But don't worry, you will soon see the end of the tunnel.
Note: if possible, bring a pair of secateurs. Vegetation has reclaimed the old railway line. To make it easier to walk along this path and to keep it alive, feel free to cut back any branches that are blocking the way.

A pleasant and easy hike despite its length. Be careful at point 16: cross the bridge over the old railway line, follow the path downhill to the left and don't miss the drovers' road on the left.
The only downside is crossing the housing estate at the start and the uninteresting town of Vernosc.
Completed in 4½ hours.

A very beautiful route, without any difficulty as the elevation gain is not significant.
The variety of landscapes, the beautiful river (the Cance) with its abundant water, and places that remind us that the valley was once very industrial, where you can feel the atmosphere of times gone by.
It is truly impressive to think that there used to be a railway line passing through the tunnel. The various bridges are crossing points that leave a lasting impression.
Thank you very much for this beautiful hike. There were a few people around Roche de Péréandre, of course, but otherwise there was practically no one on the trail. No problem parking near the Thorrenc inn.

A long route not particularly difficult, offering interesting and varied scenery including heritage sites, hamlets and flowers. You will need a torch for the end of the route. At no. 16, the small path on the left leads uphill and is just after the large bridge. At Pereandre rock, the picnic area in front of the rock offers a beautiful view .

A quick note about the end of No. 16: after reaching the tarmac road after the red barrier, you need to take the path on the right marked GRP almost immediately. Otherwise, it's a great walk, a little difficult but rewarding and full of discoveries.

A beautiful and very interesting hike: lots to see and discover along the way, including hamlets, historical and/or industrial heritage sites (Marc Seguin suspension bridge, silk mills, railway tunnel), natural curiosities (Péréandre rock), and more.
The only slight downside is that there are many sections on roads or tarmac paths.
