To start this walk, head to the car park opposite the church, built from red Vosges stone.
(S/E) Facing the church, turn left onto Rue de l’Église and walk for 100m, then turn left just after number 9 on this street to take a grassy path that runs behind the house.
This short climb will take you onto a tarmac road where you will see, on your left, a house with a very, very original architecture in the shape of a tortoise.
(1) At the crossroads, continue straight on. After about 400m along a track through fields and two bends, one of which is a hairpin bend, take the forest track on the right marked with a ‘Blue Disc’.
After passing through a small copse, you’ll reach a grassy path. Walking poles will come in handy on this steep slope. 100m further up, you’ll arrive at the back of a hotel.
(2) Continue along the tarmac road and turn left at the three-way junction. The route passes in front of a house in the hamlet of Le Faudé and ends on a footpath. Continue for about 60m and you’ll reach a forest track.
(3) Turn left towards La Roche du Chat Noir and follow this track southwards.
(4) At the three-way junction, turn right to continue along the forest track after passing La Roche du Chat Noir, taking the path on the left where there is a large antenna.
Back at the three-way junction, follow the path on the right for 100m, then at the junction turn right again for about 100m.
(5) After passing the piles of wood on your left, look out for a small path on the left that leads you towards the Tour du Faudé.
This leads you onto a forest track. Continue along this track to the right and, 50 metres further on, take a path on your left towards the tower. Follow the signs for “Tour du Faudé”.
The return journey will be via the small path you took to reach the tower; on the way down, at the junction on your right, head towards the Croix de Bermont or take the (longer) forest track from the top of the Grand Faudé, as it circles round it.
(6) Once back on the forest track, turn right onto the path running alongside the field to reach the road 500m further down.
Turn left onto the road and continue down towards the village of La Goutte.
At the second bend, you will see a cross (monument). Take the path across the fields to reach a house a few metres further down. On your left, join the road which will take you all the way down this descent, back to Rue de l’Église.
(7) At the junction, turn left onto Rue de Lannilis, then right to rejoin Rue de l'Église and the car park (S/E).
There's also a nice picnic spot at the foot of the tower. However, we missed the end of the trail in the forest (the signs and map weren't very clear), which meant that the walk back along the road was even longer
But in the end it wasn't too bad as there wasn't much traffic and there were still some beautiful views of the valley.
