La Tour des Bois, starting from La Tour-de-Sçay

Climb the 146 steps of the Tour des Bois to discover a 360° panorama from a height of 26 metres.
A third of the route is through woodland and the rest follows a track through the wind farm, one of the largest in France, which is shared between Rougemont, La Tour-de-Scay and Autechaux, in the Central Doubs. On clear days, you can see 36 of the farm’s 43 wind turbines from the top of the tower.

Description of the walk

Park at the edge of the woods in La Tour-de-Sçay at a place called Le Verjoulot.

(S/E) Start the route at the trials bike park. Follow the path to the edge of the woods. Enter the woods by turning left, and continue to a crossroads with a signpost.

(1) Follow the signs for La Tour des Bois, taking the path on the left. Continue through the woods, then turn right to rejoin a wider path. Take this to the right, then reach the junction of several paths at Mont Bichoux.

(2) Continue straight ahead along the wide path. Follow it to the end.

(3) Turn right onto the path that heads due north before veering west-south-west, reaching the hamlet of Le Rechet. Turn right here to reach La Tour des Bois for a 360° panoramic view.

(4) Return along the path in the opposite direction to the Mont Bichoux crossroads.

(2) Take the second path on the left, marked ‘Le Verjoulot’, and head due north to rejoin the original crossroads.

(1) From here, follow the route back in the opposite direction to return to the car park at the edge of the woods (S/E).

I was a bit disappointed by this walk, which I’d been wanting to do for a long time, mainly because two-thirds of the route follows the wind turbine maintenance track, and personally I didn’t really enjoy that stony section – it wasn’t very pleasant. Despite that, the initial climb through the pine forest and the view from the wooden tower are quite nice, and the section at the foot of the wind turbines is quite impressive.
For the return journey, I opted for the path that leads straight back to the Tour de Scay. It’s a rather pleasant walk through the undergrowth, and you return to the start via a quiet country lane.

A rather nice hike to get a close-up view of the (impressive) wind turbines and, above all, the forest tower with its stunning 360° view. As for the route, it does climb at the start so walking poles are essential; once on the white gravel path, it’s fairly uneventful, zigzagging between the wind turbines. For the initial climb, it’s a bit more pleasant than route No. 1 if you take the left-hand path rather than the right to reach No. 2; the left-hand path is the one to take for the return to the base. No regrets about doing it. HARRY

It’s a shame, they’re currently skidding timber down the hill. So the first, arduous climb was made even more difficult by the skidding tractors, which have left the path barely passable, especially in wet weather. Lots of ruts....

A brilliant hike; the walk through the pine trees and past the wind turbines is well worth the detour, and the tower at the end offers a superb 360-degree view.
You can easily take a different route back rather than turning around.
Just follow the arrows towards the village. You walk a bit on tarmac, but it allows you to see different scenery.

The main problem with this route is the length of the track, even after making a small adjustment to it.
I’m thinking of doing it again and looking for a way back.
There is a lack of information about the fans. (from the council or the owner)
