The Tour de la Massane circular route via the Chapelle Saint-Laurent

Starting from Valmy Park, this circular hike will take you to the beautiful promontory of the Tour de la Massane.
The descent via the Chapelle Saint-Laurent chapel completes a circular route and adds interest to the route.

This hike is demanding due to the terrain and elevation, but the scenery is well worth the effort.

Description of the walk

Park in the Valmy Park car park (easily accessible from the RD 914 dual carriageway).

(S/E) Leaving the car park, walk along the castle wall beside the vineyards and descend into the woods to reach a track.

(1) From there, the route is marked in yellow all the way. Climb up to the left along this track until you reach a three-way junction.

(2) Take the path that climbs up to the left. The ascent is gradual and rejoins the track a little higher up, which you should follow for a few dozen metres.

(3) Turn right towards the Tour de la Massane. Follow this path which climbs and zigzags through the woods on steep, rocky terrain. Follow the markings carefully. After a steep section, you will arrive at a track.

(4) Cross the track and continue straight ahead along a path carved into the rock. After this steep section, the landscape opens up a little and descends slightly to a large intersection of two tracks at a cistern.

(5) Pass the intersection and climb to the right towards the Tour de la Massane. Cut across another track and rejoin it a little higher up at Coll del Camp d'en Selva.

(6) Continue left on the track for a few hundred metres, then climb up a path on the right in a fairly steep, open area. Then return to the forest and turn slightly right, following the marked path (which does not correspond to the one on the IGN map) to reach an intersection at an altitude of 662 m.

(7) Begin the final climb to the Tour de la Massane on the left. At the edge of the forest, the tower is located due south on a promontory. It is accessed by a few steps, which lead to a small orientation table.

(8) Begin the descent via the same route as the ascent until you reach the intersection at an altitude of 662 m.

(7) Turn left to descend to Parc de Valmy, making a circular route. After a nearly horizontal section, you will arrive at an intersection at Roc del Grill.

(9) Turn right and tackle a steeper part of the descent, particularly when it is exposed, following a power line. Shortly afterwards, you will reach an intersection at a track at Mas d'en Bardès.

(10) Turn right onto a path that climbs towards the Chapelle Saint-Laurent. After a few winding sections on a slope, you will arrive at this pretty little chapel. Turn right in front of it to reach a track.

(11) Follow this track, which descends to the left towards Parc de Valmy. Pass a first intersection at a cistern, keeping to the right, then a second one shortly afterwards, turning left. At the end of the track, continue along a small road that passes a few isolated houses and, just after a bridge, climb up to the right to return to the starting track.

(1) Climb up into the woods on the left to return to the car park (S/E).

Very nice hike, the tower is beautiful and the view from the top is incredible. Done during a heatwave, the entire climb is well shaded and can be done at a leisurely pace. However, a good half of the return trip is in full sun. But in normal weather conditions, this is not a problem.

A pleasant hike with a good elevation gain but no difficulty, often in the woods, with a view of the coastline and the surrounding area from the tower. This route is well marked, but I preferred not to go up to point 7 and instead went straight ahead, which was a less steep climb, a little longer, arriving at the tower from the south, and I came back down via point 7.

I made the climb in an hour and a half; it's quite steep in places. I took a circular detour to extend the route before reaching the tower. This hike offers magnificent views – a real treat!

La Torre de la Maçana

A steady 2½-hour climb with an elevation gain of 850 metres along rocky, often ravined paths that require sturdy footwear.
The journey takes place amid lush Mediterranean vegetation consisting mainly of conifers, holm oaks and cork oaks. There are few views of the magnificent Vermeille coast before the summit, which is a shame...
But when the Torre de la Maçana appears through the thick foliage, what a 360-degree view!
From Port Vendre to Argeles at our feet on the east side, the Albères mountain range to the west and beyond that, the snow-capped Mont Canigou. It's magnificent when the weather is good, as it is today, but a parka is still welcome on the watchtower, which is open to the four winds... 🥶
The descent is tricky and difficult, even dangerous in places, as the paths are steep and very uneven.
The 12 km were covered in 5 hours and 15 minutes, including breaks, at a steady but sustained pace.
There were many hikers, walkers and runners on the trail.
