Description of the walk

Departure from the 2 Aiguilles car park, 500 metres east of the Maison de Sainte Victoire, in the commune of Saint-Antonin.

(S/E) From the car park, facing Saint-Victoire, cross the road; the markings are on a rock.
The black route (Garagaï, quite difficult) starts on the right; follow it to the summit.
Ignore the next three paths that branch off to the left, then the markings will head north-east straight towards the cliff. 150 metres before the cliff face, ignore the marked paths on either side.

Be careful, from this point onwards, the black markings are quite far apart and there are paths that will lead you astray. Be sure to look for and follow the markings, otherwise you may find yourself in dangerous situations

(1) Once at the foot of the cliff, you will encounter the first difficulty: the Pied de l'Éléphant.
After this tricky little passage, continue the climb, with the markings heading west.
The route alternates between scree slopes, short climbing sections and paths.
Once you reach a scree slope, the black markings will soon meet up with the green markings (Forcioli)

(2). Leave the scree to cross large rock slabs and one last climbing section. Not far away is the Gouffre du Petit Garagaï. To the west, a little lower down, you can see the entrance to another chasm, the Grand Garagaï.
On the right, you can see the entrance to the Tunnel du Garagaï. You will need to pass through the wall to reach the ridge.
The crossing is steep and a little tricky, as the rock has become slippery due to heavy foot traffic.

(3) As you exit the tunnel, another landscape comes into view with the north face of Sainte-Victoire.
Turn left onto the ridge path (GR®9– red and white markings). Turn left again to climb up to the Croix de Provence (which is not the highest point of the massif).

(4) From the Croix de Provence, descend on theGR® to reach the Prieuré de la Sainte-Victoire, a splendid, beautifully renovated and rather surprising place. A picnic is highly recommended here.

(5) Leave the priory grounds and turn left to continue the descent on the GR®. About 200m further down, at a crossroads, leave theGR® and continue the descent on the blue trail (Bimont). It follows the ridge on fairly easy paths.
At the first junction on the left with the red trail, leave it and continue straight downhill on the blue trail.

(6) At the second fork, on a small platform with a cairn, the dotted red markings invite you to descend to the left.
Descend this stony path (be careful not to slip) towards the Refuge de Cézanne, which can be seen at the bottom.
The path joins the first red fork you passed earlier. Continue downhill to reach a crossroads, very close to the Refuge de Cézanne.
Turn left towards the Oppidum Untinos and Maison de la Sainte Victoire.

(7) A few metres further on, take the opportunity to visit the Refuge Cézanne. Continue along the path marked in brown with theGR®653Ato the Oppidum. 300m after the refuge, turn left at the signpost.
After walking for about 700 metres, at the top of a short steep climb, the Oratoire de l'Amitié is worth a quick stop. Continue for another 300 metres until you reach a crossroads.

Turn right towards the Oppidum and the Deux Aiguilles car park, leaving the brown markings to follow the yellow markings.
Along the way, a path allows you to make a round trip to the Untinos oppidum. Retrace your steps to finish the descent on the right. Further down, at a crossroads with yellow "Y" markings, turn left to reach the car park (S/E).

Please note that the trail is closed to hikers by prefectural decree due to rockfalls. We went ahead anyway, explaining if necessary that we weren't necessarily hiking on this trail but on the Sainte Victoire face (there are many tracks, but be careful, as it can sometimes be dangerous). In my opinion, the trail has been re-marked to take the rockfalls into account. The excellent "black" markings allow you to follow it to the end, with a few steps where you need to use your hands but can do so with relative confidence.

Superb route! Quite steep and athletic at times. The ridge road and the return via the Pas de l'Escalette are fun but technical. Not to be missed.

I did this hike on 21/01/2024 and was surprised to see that many people take this route, which is quite difficult according to the recommendation. Lots of families with small children? And above all, people who were clearly unaware that hiking on this type of black trail requires good physical condition, good shoes and, in short, suitable equipment! I came across people who were struggling...

I am gradually discovering the south face of Sainte Victoire. I loved this hike, which is really challenging and (in my case) allowed me to step out of my comfort zone a little! There are quite a few technical and tricky sections. Although I am not afraid of heights, this could scare people who are sensitive to walking above empty space.

The trail is well marked, although sometimes a little faded, so you need to stay alert. The trail is sometimes difficult to find, so it's best to follow the route suggested by Visorandonneur. However, I didn't follow the entire suggested route, opting instead to return via the Pas du Berger. This descent is also quite technical and requires good training and walking poles. The work on the cross has been completed.

Thank you for this route!

A very beautiful hike, especially the climb up the black trail (I knew the rest, but it was still very nice)! Nothing more to add, it's easy to follow the black markings and Isa83's helpful comments. I met two people on the way up and a few more after that...Access to the top of the cross is temporarily blocked (until mid-January 2024 for repairs), but you can climb up the east side nearby to enjoy the view for a moment without interfering with the work
Beautiful light and a great panorama! Thanks again, Slinky, for your suggestion.

It is possible to do the course with a dog (I have a German pointer). Only one section is a bit tricky, but otherwise it's a nice technical course, just the way I like it. Be careful though, there is no water source for our four-legged friends.

First of all, thank you very much for this route! It was very complete in terms of emotions and landscapes. A real treat, both on the way up and on the way down! A concentrated version of Sainte Victoire, in fact. No one on the way up, lots of people afterwards, especially around the Croix de Provence and the Priory (which made the rocks very slippery).
There are some technical and slightly daunting sections on the black route, but we didn't get stuck. Just the right amount of fun and challenge. But we are a group of regular mountain hikers, some of whom are experienced (not me). We took a rope with us just in case (for the cave), but the weather was dry and we didn't need it.
The very precise information provided by the Association des Amis de la Sainte Victoire is a good addition (https://www.amisdesaintevictoire.asso.fr...), although they are very cautious (it's a bit scary to read...but it's reasonable). In particular, they indicate a small but significant change in the route before reaching the cave and the summit. It is essential to follow it because the descending gully is difficult and previously you had to climb back up the scree. Now there are "steps" going up (it looks difficult but there are good handholds, in fact) that lead to a secure and reinforced crossing of the scree. They also advise taking the right-hand path when climbing up to the swallow cave. Indeed, it is not slippery and there are plenty of handholds. In short, as many have already said, you must follow the markings carefully and don't hesitate to turn back if you lose them. In conclusion, a beautiful hike, just the way we like them! Thank you, thank you!

Excellent parish-specific to Brittany signposting, which is parish specific to Brittany and very effective as long as you pay attention.
In my opinion, the return via the Moine and Berger route is more consistent with the ascent
The estimated travel time is a little short

A very beautiful, challenging hike that is classified as "very difficult" for good reason.
What more can be said that hasn't already been said in the other comments?
I would emphasise that it is best to do this walk in dry weather, preferably with a partner, and above all to follow the black markings carefully from the 2 Aiguilles car park to the Garagaï pass on the ridge.
We didn't meet anyone on the way up, but from the Croix de Provence onwards there were lots of people on the way down.
Thank you

I completed this route during the week after work and, of course, there was no one else around.
With or without the route marked out, the trail is well signposted.
It's a challenging route where you have to use your arms
I didn't come back down the same route, but took the Pas du Clapet, which is steeper.
In any case, it was a great experience and a lot of fun.
it should be done in dry weather and not the day after or on a rainy day so as not to slip on the rocks.

Thank you for this route

When hiking in winter, we expected some slippery and potentially difficult passages, but up to Garagai: no problem.
However, it is very important to follow the markings and not stray from them. You have to look for them systematically, otherwise you risk ending up on a climbing wall or at the edge of a cliff... If you follow the markings, which are clearly visible, the path is easy to follow. There are a few technical sections, but I didn't see anything insurmountable, and I don't climb. Unfortunately, however, we were unable to cross the Garagai: water was running down the walls and they were really slippery. It was impossible to get a foothold... we had to turn back. In dry weather, despite the difficulty of the passage, I think we would have succeeded. Two hikers went there after us, but with a little climbing practice, they made it through. To be done again in very dry weather, because the circuit is well worth the detour!

A challenging hike, fairly well marked with cairns and black markings. The only difficulty for me, being short, was at the start, at the foot of the elephant. After that, the well-chosen route is fairly easy to climb, with rocks that provide good grip.

I descended via the Pas du Moine and Pas du Berger, but the Pas du Clapier would have kept the same airy feel!
I couldn't check the GPS route because my mobile phone kept shutting down as soon as I opened the route saved in my favourites...

A very beautiful hike, with a few technical sections
Not suitable for children, as there are some dizzying passages that could be dangerous for anyone with a fear of heights
Breathtaking views both during the climb and at the top, and the lovely surprise of the cave and priory after the Croix de Provence
The descent is less interesting than the climb, but the climb is so exceptional that the descent suffers in comparison
In terms of duration, I think you should add half an hour for average hikers (as is my case)

quite a gap on the GPS track of the ascent, the Garagai trail has been recalibrated and is much easier. Don't stray too far from the black markings; the trail isn't vertiginous, but slipping is not allowed!
a rope may be reassuring for the less experienced
for the descent, I preferred to go via the Pas du Clapier, which is much more interesting
