The Promenade des Poètes, starting from the Passage

This walk follows a route along the banks of the Garonne and through beautifully landscaped paths right in the city centre. It is particularly recommended in winter, when the hiking trails are impassable, and in spring, to enjoy the landscaping.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the entrance to the Cave shop on Rue du Trech.

(S/E) Head down towards the Garonne.

(1) Head across the road to quickly join the path that runs along the left bank of the river. Take it to the right (you can stay on the road if this path is too muddy). Stay on this path until the next junction.

(2) Leave the path, turn right and continue along the street opposite (Rue Pierre de Ronsard). After passing a wash house, you’ll reach the junction near Saint-Urbain Church.

(3) Continue straight on along Avenue John Fitzgerald Kennedy, turning right as you go. At a crossroads shaped like an inverted Y, you’ll come to a blue barrier at No. 18.

(4) Turn left into the passage between the houses to reach No. 15 Rue Paul Doumer. Turn left and follow this street, which further on becomes Rue Sadi Carnot. At the start of the bend, between Nos. 9 and 11, turn right to take another passage between the houses and arrive at a large junction (Avenue des Pyrénées).

(5) Cross the avenue with great care at the pedestrian crossing, then take the path opposite which runs alongside Rue Théophile de Viau: this path is called the “Promenade des Poètes”. Go round the roundabout on the right and enter the grounds of Château Tournis. Walk straight through the park, crossing a street (Rue Georges Bizet) and then the wide avenue (Avenue de l’Aéroport), until you reach Rue des Roses.

(6) Carry on straight ahead, cross a small park with a children’s playground and follow the path along Impasse de Montherlant.

(7) At the end, cross the road again and continue straight ahead onto Impasse Charles Beaudelaire. Carry on straight ahead to reach the end of the Promenade des Poètes, at the junction with the Route de Nérac (D656), opposite No. 20.

(8) Cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing, follow the road to the right for a few dozen metres, then turn left, just after No. 18, into the passage between the houses; then turn right at the next street (Rue Jules Romain) and join a side road (Route de Brax). Turn left onto this road and continue to the junction with Chemin de la Grande Borde (a dead-end road).

(9) Turn right onto this road, then follow the right bank of the Ruisseau de Rieumont. When you reach a bridge over this stream, ignore it and continue to the right (Chemin de Vigneau) to reach the Canal Latéral à la Garonne.

(10) Turn right onto the footpath, walk past the recycling centre and reach a roundabout.

(11) Head straight ahead and then diagonally to the right onto Avenue de l’Europe, and carry on straight ahead until you reach the roundabout at Avenue de la Marne (D6556).

(12) Carefully go round it on the right, walk past the Chat d’Oc shopping centre, then continue along Avenue Michel Ricard. Cross Avenue de Verdun, then follow Avenue de Consuegra straight ahead until you reach another roundabout near the Lapoujade Cultural Centre.

(13) Turn left onto the dirt track, cross a field, then turn right onto the path along the banks of the Garonne (Rue de la Bénazie). Return to the original junction.

(1) Turn right to quickly reach the car park (S/E).

A very pleasant walk, even though it’s mostly through the town, but the Poets’ Walk is definitely worth doing – thanks to the creator, visorandonneur…!

Instead of crossing the field at the end (step 13), it is better to walk past Intermarché and, at the far end, turn left onto a clearly marked and safe path to reach Rue de la Bénazie.

To be used if the usual routes are muddy. Take care when crossing roads
