The plain, the Norges and the Longeault-Pluvault pond from Genlis

An easy walk along the banks of the River Norges, crossing the plain south of Genlis and passing by the Longeault-Pluvault pond. The route has little shade and is mostly on stony paths.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the beginning of Rue de la Prairie, a dead-end street.

(S/E) Walk down this street and cross the bridge over the River Norges.

(1) After the bridge, turn left, then right, and follow the path to a crossroads.

(2) Take the left-hand path and continue straight ahead until you reach the next crossroads at an elevation of 196 metres.

(3) Turn left onto Chemin d'Huchey and continue to the Norges.

(4) Cross the bridge and, at the first crossroads in Huchey, take Rue de Huchey on the right until you reach the water treatment plant.

(5) Go around it on the right and follow the riverbank along a grassy path until you reach a small, narrow concrete bridge.

(6) Cross it and continue to the path at elevation 193.

(7) Turn left and continue straight ahead until you reach the first path on the left, which takes you around the pond in a clockwise direction.

(8) Go through the gate, turn left and follow the edge of the pond to the end.

(9) Stay on the grassy path on the right and continue along the edge of the pond to return to the gate.

(8) Retrace your steps to the crossroads at elevation 193.

(7) Continue straight ahead to the crossroads at elevation 193, which you passed on the way there.

(3) Turn left, then right after about 400 metres. Join a path coming from the left.

(10) Continue straight ahead until you reach the junction at elevation 197.

(11) Turn right and join the first fork on the way out.

(2) Turn left and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the car park on Rue de la Prairie (S/E).

Notes

The first written references to Genlis date from between 860 and 1060. Built on the site of ancient Roman roads, the town is home to a 17th-century castle and the Church of Saint-Martin, rebuilt in the 19th century. The Château de Genlis was built at the end of the 17th century and has a large wooded park.
