La Pigne, starting from Claviers

An easy, family-friendly route mostly along forest paths, ending with a magnificent viewpoint.
Sunny all the way; the return route is cooler as it’s on the north-facing slope.
In spring, it’s full of flowers.
In summer, make sure you take plenty of water and set off early.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the school in Claviers.

(S/E) Take the tarmac road, known as the Chemin de la Lioure, and head towards a Y-junction.

(1) Turn left onto an access path that ends at a gate. Go through it to join a public footpath. Cross a pretty terraced olive grove. After the olive grove, follow the track which ends in a small path that also leads into an olive grove. Walk along the left-hand side of it to return to the tarmac road, follow it for just over two hundred metres, and arrive at an X-shaped crossroads where there is also a cistern.

(2) Leave the road at the hairpin bend and continue right onto the forest track. Carry on along a virtually level stretch to reach the houses at Clos Fournier.

(3) Turn left, heading due north, onto the ascending path to reach the hunters’ meeting point.

(4) Turn right on the way there and continue climbing gently. Reach the junction with the PR®.

(5) Take thePR® marked in yellow opposite and continue climbing straight on towards Éouveirot. After a hairpin bend, you’ll come to another junction with a water tank and a signpost.

(6) Follow the sign for “Point de vue” to the left and reach the viewpoint.

(7) Return to the previous junction.

(6) Take the path opposite, between holm oaks and pines, to reach the summit of La Pigne where, unfortunately, there is no view.

(8) Return to the previous junction by following the path back the way you came.

(6) Turn left onto thePR® and head towards the junction.

(5) Leave thePR® and its yellow markings to follow the route taken on the way out and return to the hunters’ crossroads.

(4) Turn right into the Bois de l'Ubac, heading towards Bargemon, continue down the slope and you will come to a Y-junction.

(9) Continue left onto the Chemin de l'Ubac until you reach a barrier at the junction with the
tarmac road.

(10) Follow it downhill to the car park opposite Claviers school (S/E).

Worth a visit

The entire walk takes place amidst the primeval forest of holm oaks and pines. From time to time, you can catch a glimpse of the surrounding hills and mountains.
In spring, the paths are full of flowers.
(6) The viewpoint is a lookout post for the fire brigade, offering a commanding view of the entire Esterel and Maures ranges down to the coast, and a lovely view of Bargemon. View of Lake Méaulx below and a glimpse of Lake Saint-Cassien in the distance. Fayence to the left, Fréjus in the background.

A lovely short hike with no particular difficulties. Easy trails and paths. At point 8, the cross is no longer there. It is located at the summit of La Pigne, accessible via a small path about 50 metres to the right on the descent. Point 7 is the ideal place for lunch.

Hello,
A route with no particular difficulties. Follow the GPX track closely at the start to get through the terraced fields.
This hike is worth it for the view at point 7, which has facilities designed for a long break.
I suggest adding an extension to the “Croix de la Pigne”, accessible after the summit of La Pigne via a small path signposted by a wooden sign. There is also a beautiful view from this spot.

On the other hand, a variation that involves heading down to the Col de Saint Arnoux and rejoining the route via the north-facing path is more enjoyable, as it means you don’t just have to turn back...

Good evening, today was probably not the best day for the view.
I’m a bit confused about the directions with backtracking, or even those that seem pointless. Could you clarify?

This walk is pleasant, but its main attraction lies in the panoramic view that awaits us at the summit. The weather was rather overcast when I went, and there wasn’t quite enough sunshine to really enjoy the moment.

The climb isn’t difficult, even though you have to climb over old terraced fields. The paths are wide and clear. Following the route, you are sometimes led to slightly baffling destinations, which are probably unnecessary, especially as you soon have to turn back.

The start is a bit steep for those over 60, but otherwise it’s very pleasant
