Circular Riou de Claviers loop and Garron track starting from L’Éouvière

A pleasant, shaded walk through the Seillans forest and along the Riou de Claviers. No difficulty, even in summer. You may occasionally spot wild boars, which are numerous in the area. You can cool off on the way back, provided the Riou hasn’t run dry...

Description of the walk

Park in the car park alongside the D562, opposite L’Éouvière.

(S/E) Take the forest track which winds its way downwards, heading south, through the Seillans Forest: there are numerous observation platforms, used during the hunting season. Continue downwards, leaving the Pas de l’Eouvé path on your left, until you reach a three-way junction.

(1) Keep to the right, pass the ‘Sentier des Crêtes’ on your left, and continue along the main track to the cistern.

(2) Ignore the two paths on the left – the first of which leads to Lac de Méaulx – and carry on straight downhill until you reach the junction with the Piste du Garron.

(3) Turn right onto the Piste du Garron, which continues down through the forest until it reaches the Riou de Claviers

(4) Follow the track running alongside the Riou, heading northwards. Take note of the old buildings on the opposite bank of the Riou: there are several places to swim here, provided the Riou has enough water. Please be aware that in the event of a storm, the water level can rise rapidly. Continue upstream until you reach the D562.

(5) Turn left onto the D562 and follow it carefully for about a hundred metres until you reach a bridge. Cross the D562 just past the bridge and take the path on the right which heads north, then east, and rejoins the D562 very close to the starting point. Follow the road to the left for about fifty metres, then cross over to reach the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Swimming is possible in the shallow sections of the Rio de Claviers when there is sufficient water.

I live 1 km from the start of this walk, which I’d never done before. So it adds a bit to the distance, which is great.
It’s a simple, unpretentious but very pleasant walk, mostly through the woods – which is especially welcome during this heatwave. The first section descends gently in the shade of the trees, allowing you to listen to the silence of the forest and let your mind wander.
The climb back up follows a very narrow path that’s quite overgrown with grass, but with the route description there’s no risk of going astray.
The tricky bit is crossing the county road at the bridge, which must be done with great care. Cars come along quickly. Of course, the stream was completely dry. One to do again when it’s rained.

Unlike the previous review, I think a hike isn’t just about what you ‘see’, but what you feel. On 1 May, I went on this hike on my own, and I really enjoyed the experience. For me, hiking is, above all, about reconnecting with nature: listening to the sounds of the forest, smelling the flowers, walking surrounded by greenery, coming across horses roaming free… I found all of that here, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Admittedly, there is a short stretch along a road, but the rest of the route more than makes up for it. I definitely plan to go back, this time with company!

A reasonably pleasant walk, but not particularly interesting. The only enjoyable bit was walking alongside the river. The few metres along the road are not to be recommended; it’s a county road with a lot of traffic. There are also cars driving along the forest track.
