Description of the walk

Coming from the south, Col de la Croix Haute, take: Lalley, towards Tréminis, Château Bas, Château Méa and before the bridge, turn right towards Le Serre.
Park in the car park at the entrance to the village of Le Serre.

(S/E) The start is behind the church, following the road eastwards to the first crossroads.

(1) At the first crossroads, turn right. The road becomes a track and heads south-east, approaching the torrent.

(2) Cross the Rapidet stream and here the slope becomes steep, but fortunately the path is well marked. You are now on the ridge and in the Charbonneyre forest.

(3) As you leave the forest, on the right, there is a passage where you need to use your hands, but it is not dangerous, just requires a little care.
The Petit and Grand Ferrand faces, with the Col du Drouillet, open up before us. Behind us is the Trieve and, in the distance, the Vercors mountain range. All our efforts are forgotten when faced with such a view.

(4) You arrive at a grassy area where the path branches off to the left before returning to the Ferrand quarry. Continue to point 1685, marked by a large rock.

(5) Continue through the clearing to the cave. Cover up, as it is cool inside.

(6) Retrace your steps to the fork at the large rock (point 1685).

(5) Cross (south-west) the dry stream, look for the barely visible path, and climb up the clearly visible path opposite on the Talweg. You are now approaching the only tricky part of the hike.

(7) Continue along the path overgrown with grass, below Les Tonneaux, until you reach the forest track (1582 m). You will arrive at Combe de Maroure.

(8) Follow this track, which winds down in large loops to the hamlet of La Chenal.

(9) Turn right and head for the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike in overcast weather in the morning, but a few sunny spells in the afternoon allowed us to enjoy the magnificent views. In any case, the visit to the cave is definitely the highlight of the day (bring a headlamp to venture into the tunnel, but be careful not to slip).

Be warned that the first climb in the forest is very steep, so you need to be in very good physical condition and walking sticks are strongly recommended, especially if the path is wet. The same goes for the final scree slope (ascent and descent), which can be quite unstable without sticks.

Also, the descent between points 7 and 8 is really long, so don't be surprised, but you'll eventually reach the track at the bottom. This alternative route for the return journey definitely adds value to the circuit with some beautiful views, especially at the beginning (before the descent into the forest).

Also worth noting is the presence of numerous chamois, especially in the scree before reaching the cave.

A superb hike, which requires good physical condition and a calm disposition as it can be steep in places. The scenery is magnificent, and the cave is well worth the effort to reach it. You can see chamois everywhere and hear marmots.
The only downside to this route is that although it avoids retracing your steps down the Le Serre side, which is quite steep, the second part of the return journey (the zigzag descent) is very tedious. So don't do this route uphill to reach the cave, as it's really too boring. However, the first part of the return journey in the recommended direction, after the cave (between 5 and 7), is really worth the detour. It's beautiful and pleasant.

A very beautiful hike with a magnificent view upon reaching the cave. PLEASE NOTE: there is still snow around the cave at present. For safety reasons, I decided to turn back because the mild weather has caused the snow to become unstable and there is a risk of it coming loose. However, I will happily do it again a little later. Thank you for sharing.

The hike to the Fétoure cave is magnificent, but with a very steep path in the lower part and a more even path in the second part (long scree slope), some passages in the lower part that require caution (cliff nearby), the atmosphere in the scree slope of the cave is superb, for caving enthusiasts. The cave seems to continue beyond the broken stalagmite. This hike requires a bit of training, with an elevation gain of 100 to 1,100 metres.

This hike should not be attempted in wet weather, especially on a day like today when the temperature is 0°C. In cold weather, the long scree slope is difficult to cross because all the rocks are icy.
It is impossible to reach the cave on the last section due to ice and snow, but there are magnificent views and numerous chamois.
Around point 7, the path is very tricky and very narrow. We couldn't get through because it had collapsed. The area needs a cable or repairs.
A hike to be repeated in better weather.

Good description – however, we took a path at one of the last bends in the track that leads back to the valley (there is a cairn at the bend that turns to the right), a stream that is not easy to cross, then an old track and immediately a path overlooking the greenhouse (it climbs a little but it's really beautiful). It joins the uphill path just above the climb after crossing the stream that descends from the Grande Casse.

A beautiful hike at the foot of Grand Ferrand, which resembles a large cathedral.
The climb through the forest is quite tedious (no views) and steep.
No problems to report with the directions provided.
The path between points 5 and 7 is becoming overgrown with vegetation (the grass is tall).
