The forest and the northern districts of Fougères

After very quickly leaving the city’s noise behind whilst walking alongside the Ruisseau de Groslay and its arboretum, the walker enters the forest, where natural paths and well-maintained forest lanes combine, eventually crossing a residential area before returning to the starting point.

Description of the walk

Park near Boulevard de Groslay in one of the car parks (CCAS or church).

(S/E) Leave the car park heading towards the town centre and take the path on the left – marked by its arboretum – which runs alongside the Groslay stream. The path leads to Route de Gorron: cross this road and continue straight ahead, still following the stream.

(1) Just before you reach the pond, turn right and walk round the pond, keeping it on your left. At the end of the pond, continue to the right to cross the stream via a footbridge. Follow the path northwards and walk along theGR®34(red and white markings) for just under a hundred metres.

(2) Turn left (let theGR® continue straight on). Carry on through the forest along a path not shown on maps, first heading west then north-west. Cross the ‘Allée forestière des Jumeaux’ and, 100 metres further on, cross theD177 with care and carry on straight ahead. Very soon, the path runs alongside the D108 on your left. Carry on along this north-bound path.

(3) Turn right onto the forest track for just over 100 metres, then turn left onto a path heading north. Turn onto the first path on the left (west-north-west), which is also not shown on maps. Follow it until you reach the Carrefour du Solier.

(4) Cross the D108 and take the forest track furthest to the left. Follow it until you reach a crossroads. Turn right and join the Route forestière du Gattesel. Follow it for 20 metres to the right.

(5) Turn left onto the path. At the end of the path, turn left and continue to the water source.

(6) Take the road on the left, then veer slightly to the right to join the track running parallel to the road. This track veers to the right and then to the left, leading to La Touche.

(7) Take the road on the right. This is the Chemin de la Forairie, which, after passing under a high-voltage power line, ends at Rue Augustin Beauverger. Follow this street to the right, cross over the D806 county road and, immediately afterwards, turn right. At the bottom of the descent, turn left to enter the housing estate via Rue Albert de Dalmas. After 50 metres, turn right to go round the housing estate.

(8) Take the footpath on the left, then climb the few steps on the left. Follow Rue Julien Cracq to the right. Turn left onto Rue Mélouin for 60 metres and turn right onto Chemin de la Fougue. Continue along its extension via Chemin des Druides.

(9) Cross Avenue de la Verrerie with care. Continue almost directly opposite, turning left onto Allée des Sabotiers. At the end of this, turn left and walk alongside a building. Follow Rue des Bleuts to the right. Follow the road as it bends first to the left and then to the right, and cross Avenue de Normandie. The car park where you started is nearby (S/E).

A lovely walk to do with the family or in a group; it’s very peaceful, and even the part through the town is really nice. The only slight downside is point number 8: you need to take a flight of stairs about a hundred metres before it, as the old path has been blocked off.
