The miraculous fountain of Bellevau in Sers

Set off to discover the miraculous fountain of Bellevau in the commune of Sers (16). This place is a real gem, home to an underground chapel and a fountain set in a green and cool setting. Arriving via the mule track, you will pass the remains of troglodyte dwellings until you reach the chapel, part of which is underground (private property). Behind the chapel, on the side of the rock and sheltered by trees, a few cavities house religious emblems and signs of contemplation.

Description of the walk

You can park on the road at elevation 99. Please leave the road clear for other vehicles. Please note that this road crosses the old railway line between Ribérac (24) and Magnac-sur-Touvre (16).

(S/E) Continue along the stone path to the north-west, then quickly turn right onto a narrow dirt track. When you reach the stone path, continue straight ahead on the dirt track and cross the stream coming from the fountain you will see.

(1) Leave the farm track and take a grassy track that climbs back up towards the forest. Please note: if the map shows several dirt tracks, these are no longer usable as they are overgrown. The only way through is the narrow dirt track, which you cannot miss.

(2) Take the dirt track on the left. Same note as before: the other tracks shown on the map are overgrown.

(3) Take the track on the left that descends towards the small valley. As you enter the Bellevau site, you will pass the remains of troglodyte dwellings before arriving at the esplanade where the chapel and fountain are located. The troglodyte remains and the chapel are private property. To leave, simply continue along the main path between the trees, then turn left to reach the entrance with a metal gate. There is a footpath on the side. This will take you to a dirt track that leads to a limestone track.

(4) Take this track on the right and walk uphill for about 100 metres, enjoying the shade of the trees.

(5) Shortly afterwards, take a dirt track, turning sharply left, and follow it alongside a fenced meadow. Depending on the season, you will be treated to some beautiful views. You will find the car park (S/E) at the end of this track.

Notes

Although there is a fountain at Bellevau, there is no indication that the water is drinkable. However, it can be used to cool down.

Bring walking sticks and walking shoes, as well as something to drink.

Pruning shears may be useful for cutting back some overgrown brambles, even though the dirt paths appear to be well maintained.

Worth a visit

Enjoy the scent of the pine forests as you walk in a place isolated from the long-distance hiking trails, where you can enjoy complete freedom.

The Bellevau site is traditionally open on 15 August for the Assumption Mass. The chapel and the underground part of the church are open to visitors.

A pleasant, not very long walk, a wonderful discovery of this chapel and fountain in a very peaceful spot. Access to the cave dwellings is not very clear, but you can still climb up via the paths along the edge of the trail , thank you for this lovely route.

An interesting and relatively short hike, ideal for an hour or so, mainly in the shade of oak trees (although on the plateau, the oaks are not very tall
Be sure to follow the directions and GPS carefully, as there are no signposts and no memory for the GPS track, which tells you to go straight ahead when the directions say to turn left.
pS: I was lucky enough to meet the creator of this route, who told me about how it was created and put me back on the right track
