La Dent du Villard from Courchevel

To the east of Courchevel, 1550m above Lac de la Rosière, the Dent du Villard is a white gypsum mountain perforated with multiple dissolution craters on its summit, making for an impressive crossing.

Description of the walk

Road access from Courchevel Moriond: turn left onto the Route du Bélvédère, then take the small road on the left at the bend towards Lac de la Rosière. Park in the Lac de la Rosière car park.

(S/E) Walk down to the lake and cross the footbridge to find the Botanical Trail.

(1) Take it on the left, follow the right bank of the lake to the start of the Dent du Villard trail.

(2) Take it on the right and start the climb to reach the crossroads of the Rocher du Bec de l'Aigle trail.

(3) Leave this trail on your left and continue to the right. After a few large zigzags through the woods, you will reach the crossroads at an elevation of 1,890 metres.

(4) Here, you have two options:
- turn right for the short, steep route marked on the trail here.
- Go straight ahead, which is the route along the ridge, through the woods, which climbs less steeply.
After two hairpin bends, you will reach a new crossroads below the cliff.

(5) Take the path on the left to reach the summit of Dent du Villard and enjoy the orientation table facing Mont Blanc.

(6) Begin the descent across the Dent du Villard ridge to the Col de la Chal.
Caution: this crossing is only suitable for people who are not prone to vertigo, as the route, while not difficult, is impressive. It winds its way between huge gypsum dissolution craters with multiple deep pits on either side of the path.
Do not attempt in wet weather.
Important note: If you are unsure, it is better to descend via the same route you took to ascend.

(7) Continue along the steep and slippery path on the right until you reach the Botanical Trail.

(8) Turn right onto the Botanical Trail until you reach the crossroads you took on the way up.

(1) Turn left to cross the footbridge again and return to the Lac de la Rosière car park (S/E).

Notes

Route completed on 17/07/2019, it is classified as difficult due to the vertiginous descent across the Dent du Villard.
Otherwise, the route is of medium technical difficulty.
Grippy shoes (trail or hiking) are essential.
Very slippery in wet weather.
(Between 6 and 7) The crossing is a trail route.
(Between 7 and 8) From an altitude of 1950m, the descent takes the 1000-step staircase, the last 500 steps of which are named after a donor.

Worth a visit

Major geological interest, identical to that of the Petit Mont Blanc in the neighbouring valley of Pralognan.
A very interesting and well-documented botanical trail runs along the Torrent de la Rosière, but the upper part is not documented.

A superb hike that can be extended by following the ridge of Mont Charvet from point 7 to the Col de la Grande Pierre, then descending towards the Vallée des Avals. However, this adds several kilometres and takes you past the Cascade des Poux waterfall.

A magnificent hike with my 16-year-old daughter, who found the 1.5-hour climb a bit challenging, but the sublime scenery overlooking Courchevel and Lac de la Rosière made up for the elevation gain...The climb is in the shade at the end of the morning on the left side of the route (just above the Chalet Resto) and the 30-minute crossing of the ridge is unforgettable. It's not dangerous, but you need to be careful on the narrow path dotted with strange holes that look like small craters.
The rapid descent through the woods is the "annoying" part of this hike, with its 1,000 steps that require you to watch your step... it's possible to run down in just under an hour.
A short 15-minute detour to the Poux waterfalls is worth a look, and the total journey takes 3½ hours with a 730m elevation gain.

A beautiful hike starting from the magnificent Lac de la Rosière, with several possible variations (Col de la Dent, Mont Charvet ridges, etc.). Steady climb without difficulty. Crossing to the spectacular Col de la Chal between the gypsum dissolution cones (the main attraction of the hike). No difficulty, the path winds between the cones but is wide enough and the slopes are not steep.
Descent via the thousand steps trail (easier than the ascent!) but there are other options.
Lots of people at the top of the Dent. A few clouds obscured the surrounding peaks. The sky then cleared to reveal the Grand Bec, the Vanoise glaciers, etc.

A superb hike offering splendid views of Mont Blanc from the summit, with Champagny en Vanoise below, where we are staying. The orientation table gives you a superb 360° view of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The start of the descent along the ridge path is incredible because of the way nature has carved it out. Finally, there is the path of a thousand steps, which will really get your knees working.
An extraordinary hike that I highly recommend.

Hello,
this walk is simply splendid, the colours of the rock with the gypsum, immaculate white, are sublime. We didn't find the path at the top as vertiginous as indicated in the description; for us, it's a "medium" hike. You'll enjoy beautiful views of Courchevel and the splendid summer colours of the valley throughout. The walk isn't difficult, the climb is fairly gentle, with no steep sections.
Have a wonderful summer, everyone!

Hello
Thank you for this superb route. At the summit, the 360° view of the peaks and valleys is magnificent, and the icing on the cake is the view of Mont Blanc. There are few hikers at this time of year, which is a real treat. For the return trip, we turned back halfway, as the precipices are impressive (not for those who are afraid of heights) and the path has suffered the ravages of time.
