Les Arsures in Montigny

A short afternoon stroll through vineyards and forests, not forgetting to visit the pretty village of Montigny-lès-Arsures and perhaps taste the wines of the Jura. There are a few small climbs, however.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the centre of Les Arsures near the town hall.
The markings are random, sometimes yellow, sometimes red and white (GR®59), sometimes non-existent.

(S/E) Follow the main road towards Salins for a few dozen metres.
Turn right (yellow sign) towards Montigny. Go up this path.

(1) Turn left at the first three-way junction and continue straight ahead until you reach the railway line. The path bends to the left and follows the railway line for about 250 metres.

(2) Pass under the railway line on the right and turn right again to follow the railway line for about 1 km.

(3) Don't miss the passage under the railway line, on the right below (clearly visible red and white markings). Continue in the same direction but on the other side of the railway line until you reach the entrance to the village of Montigny-lès-Arsures.

(4) At the end of the street, a yellow sign indicates the directions to Arbois. Follow the one that goes up to the left at a right angle. After about 400m of climbing, go over the railway line and continue climbing, following the road to the right. Continue for about 600m until you reach a left-hand bend.

(5) Leave this road towards Arbois and descend to the right into the forest (take the path that heads north and not the one that continues along the road) and rejoin the railway line, which you cross. The forest path immediately turns left. At the next crossroads, ignore the paths that branch off to the left and then to the right, continuing straight ahead to reach a gravel road (about 600 metres after crossing the railway line).

(6) At the first junction with a main road, turn right to return to the village. Continue straight ahead to the crossroads before the cemetery.

(7) At the crossroads, turn right. After the castle, turn right at the three-way junction and continue straight ahead at the next junction (D249) to leave the village in the direction of Les Arsures. After 400 to 500 metres, the road turns slightly to the left at a hut on the left. At this point, don't miss the path that branches off to the right as an extension of the road and follow it for less than 100 metres.

(8) Do not continue straight ahead, but take a wide grassy path on the left, parallel to the road and running alongside the vineyards. Continue along this path for 600 metres until you reach a stony path, which you take to the right for 150 metres before taking another grassy vineyard path on the left. This joins a stony track.

(9) At the crossroads, turn left (yellow marker). The path becomes a road and joins the D249, which takes you back to the village opposite the town hall. The car park is on the left (S/E).

Worth a visit

Tip: leave the route at the entrance to the village to stroll through the streets and discover the beautifully renovated old houses, and why not combine pleasure with practicality by tasting Jura wines in one of the cellars. Join the route at point (5) by going up the main street (quite steep). A yellow sign at the top of this street indicates the directions to Arbois (follow the shortest route in kilometres - the one that goes uphill!).

A very beautiful afternoon hike in autumn through the vineyards. The colours were magnificent.
An easy route without much elevation gain that could be extended.

Two points to note before you set off:
- the car park near the town hall is actually the car park on the edge of the Salins road (we went to the town hall in the village and there are no spaces)
- When leaving this car park, do not take the first yellow sign marked Montigny, which is a few dozen metres from the car park... 'if we took the right car park, that is'. If you take this first path, you will be walking in the opposite direction, which is what we did.
Otherwise, it's a very beautiful autumn walk.

Set off without a map...
I had serious doubts right from the start in the vineyards heading towards the railway line. ...lack of landmarks in the vineyards...the description after Montigny leaves something to be desired...I found myself crossing the railway line, ended up in the middle of the forest and finally in the middle of a meadow...I had to set off again across the plain to reach the village of Montigny and take the road to Les Arsures because I was so fed up... 10 km, 2 hours of walking... I'm disappointed, but I'm certainly not very good at this, and next time I'll take the map route...
Otherwise, the setting (vineyards, forest, meadows, buildings in Montigny...) is magnificent.

Thanks for the comments. As far as the cabin is concerned, that's exactly my plan! Perhaps I didn't explain myself very well.

Please note point 5: after a short descent between two fields, you climb slightly into the woods. You must immediately turn right onto the first path on your right and not take the SNCF path.
The path to the hut at the exit of Montigny is not easy to find. It is better to climb slightly up the vineyard on the right via the grassy path, then turn left after 30 metres and follow the road below the hillside, which is more pleasant.
The final section between the two villages is in full sun if the weather is good.
A beautiful hike.

The hike is very pleasant; we did it in splendid weather. Not much road
and the paths are very good. For me, it's a hike to do
in spring or autumn, because when the sun is out
it gets very hot.
I forgot! After the second passage under the train, they made a path
with pebbles to get closer to the viaduct.

OK, I'll correct the error.
But let's not quibble, it's only 150 metres!

A lovely, easy hike on a beautiful sunny day. Small error in the description at the start: instead of a few dozen metres, it would be better to say about 150 metres on the main road.
