The Liry ridge via the Fay-Phades quarries

Between Tournavaux and Haulmé, this short but invigorating route follows the ridge between the Meuse and Semoy valleys. Several viewpoints are on the itinerary, as well as a section at the start of the walk through the former Fay-Phades quarry site.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Tournavaux Town Hall.

(S/E) Cross the Semoy and turn left to reach, via the Chemin de la Retorse, the signpost for La Malavisée.

(1) Turn right to reach Haut Rivage (signpost). Take the Chemin du Haut Rivage on the right and, about a hundred metres further on, turn left into the forest onto the marked path (Yellow Rectangles) until you reach the ruined buildings of the Carrières du Fay-Phades. Head towards an old electricity substation.

(2) Head uphill through the forest following the yellow markings. At the first flat section, do not turn left. The path, which is poorly marked, heads to the right. Follow the markings (which are not very clear) as best you can to reach a large quarry plateau.

(3) Head left to the edge of the plateau. Do not go down to the left; instead, go up to the right and continue along the marked path that runs alongside the quarry cliff to reach the Fay-Phades viewpoint (view of the Roche aux Corpias, Tournavaux and the Roc la Tour).

(4) Continue along the marked path to the ditch marking the boundary of the national forest. Turn right and follow this boundary to a crossroads (highest point of the route).

(5) Turn left onto the signposted path to the signpost for Les Quartiers (elevation 299 m), then on to the signpost for Le Liry.

(6) Do not head down towards Haulmé but continue in the same direction, passing the Le Liry viewpoint and then the paragliding launch site, and continue towards the Col du Liry.

(7) Turn left. Walk about fifteen metres along the tarmac and take a small path on the left . Caution! This path, formerlythe GR®16, is no longer signposted.. This cuts across the bends in the road (at each junction, the path rejoins slightly further down). The path leads out near the Haulmé cemetery. Pass the cemetery access path and take the first path on the left to the Ruha Fountain.

(8) Ignore the path leading up to Le Liry. Follow the Semoy floodplain initially, then, after a section running along a ledge above the river, return to the original crossroads.

(1) Follow the outward route back to the Tournavaux car park (S/E).

Notes

  • In the first part of the route, it is important to pay close attention to the signposting; the footpath is barely marked on the ground and is, moreover, very often ‘disrupted’ by mountain bikers.
  • You can start from Place d'Haulmé: in this case, join the route at the Ruha Fountain.

Worth a visit

The former Fay-Phades quarry site.
The Fay Phades viewpoint.
The viewpoint over Bogny and the Crête des 4 Fils Aymon as you approach the high-voltage power line.
The Liry viewpoint.
The Ruha Fountain and its magnificent vaulted ceiling.

Hello
Thank you for your feedback.
The trail markings are no longer maintained, and I understand the difficulties encountered.
After the quarry plateau, the numerous mountain bikers have made it difficult to choose the best route.
I will do this hike again before making some corrections.
Enjoy your walks!

Thank you for this beautiful hike with some nice climbs. In section 2, it's not easy to see the yellow markings after the old electrical substation. The trail is poorly marked. Read the instructions carefully. We reached the quarry plateau by climbing without markings and using the app. At 3, climb to the right after the quarry plateau, which isn't easy to find. We took a parallel path and missed the Fay-phades viewpoint. At 7, at the second road crossing, take the path marked by a gutter. Recommended.

Difficulty following the route description between points 2 and 4.
We met up at the Fay-Phades viewpoint.
Perhaps the markings need refreshing, at least at the start of the route, or even made more frequent in light of the comments left.
Two lovely viewpoints at Le Liry and then at the paragliding launch site a little further on, which seemed rather quiet.
We met lots of cyclists at the start of the route, but not further along.
Some quad bikes caught up with us at point 7; a shame they make so much noise.

A pleasant walk through the woodland, one to be repeated in different seasons.

A lovely walk; the ruins above Tournavaux look like abandoned alpine sheepfolds.
The description is helpful, but to get up to the plateau, a compass came in handy: I saw hardly any yellow markers

2- Before reaching the first ruins, head left towards an old electricity substation
Steep climb marked in yellow; before the first plateau, veer slightly to the right and try to find the yellow markings, as there is no visible trail on the ground (navigate by sight)
3- Go round the plateau to the right and look out for (50 m) the steep path on the right which then runs along the cliff
4- Given the number of paths, it is not easy to find the markings (missing or worn away)
7- At the junction of the tarmac roads, to avoid going back down via the old GR 16, I suggest continuing along the road (on flat ground) for 450 m, then taking a wide path on the left (barrier) which descends to the Semoy in the vulture reserve!!!! Once at the river, head left, following the tree-top huts of Haulmé
In this village, you’ll cross the road; head opposite, slightly higher up the path towards the Ruha fountain
This alternative route extends the route by approximately 2.8 km
This route, which is interesting and invigorating, is somewhat spoiled by the poor yellow markings, and as mentioned, the presence of mountain bikers doesn’t help matters. Perhaps the Water and Forests Department should give it a fresh coat of paint???
