Access: To get to the starting point in the heart of the village of Saint-Julien-d'Ance, head down towards the banks of the Ance, following the road that descends below the village and following the sign for "Moulin d'Ancette"
(S/E). Parking is available on the banks of the Ance. Walk up from the banks of the Ance to the centre of the hamlet.
(1) In the centre of the small village of Saint-Julien-d'Ance, opposite the church, take the road on the right. After 50 metres, leave the road and take the path on the left. After 20 metres, take the road on the right and follow it to Uffarges, 2 km away.
Be careful: on leaving Saint-Julien, turn left onto the road that climbs south-east, leaving the small road you left earlier, which leads to Saint-Georges-l'Agricol, on your right.
(2) At the entrance to Uffarges, take the lane on the left and, 100 metres further on, the first path on the left (heading east).
Just before turning onto this path, 20 metres to the right, you will see a 16th-century cross
The narrow stony path, lined with low walls, climbs up into the forest, widens and becomes a well-marked track as it reaches the plateau. Keep following this track, never taking the smaller paths coming from the right. After 300 metres without any change in elevation, on the plateau, you will come across a larger forest track.
(3) At the junction with the stony forest track, take it to the left and, 20 metres further on, leave it by taking a path to the right; note the presence of a clearly visible sign indicating the direction of "la coulée de lave de Bourianne" (yellow markings).
This path is well marked and even passable by vehicle, unlike the topographical maps (there must be an inaccuracy). Take it and it will lead you without fail to the "lava flow". After 300 metres, you will arrive at the viewpoint above the basalt chaos. There is an orientation table and a picnic table.
Leave the viewpoint on the right and follow the path (marked by walkers), which joins a track on the right. Take this track on the left, but leave it again after 25 metres.
(4) Take the first path on the left to descend from the plateau, staying as close as possible to the chaos. At the start of the path, the yellow markings are crossed out, but they reappear very quickly (these markings correspond to a small one-way circuit around the lava flow).
(5) At the D352 road from Saint-André-de-Chalencon (on the right) to Saint-Julien-d'Ance (on the left), turn left and follow the road for 350 metres.
(6) Take the track on the left (yellow markings with a line through them) which overlooks the road slightly and leads to Saint-Julien-d'Ance
When you reach your outward route at the top of the village, turn right and, 150 m further down, you will find the hamlet square, this time going around the church on the right.
(1) Follow the same route back to the car park (S/E).
