Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the village town hall.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head north-west, following the yellow and blue markings.

(1) At the crossroads near the pumping station, keep left.

(2) Ignore the access road to Puy de la Velle on the right and turn right at the junction shortly afterwards, following the direction of Fente de Babre. This part of the hike is open and partly on the road.

(3) Enter the forest and climb to the top of the ridge to join theGR®59.

(4) Once you reach the ridge, leave the Fente de Babre and head right towards Hièvre-Magny. Throughout the ridge section, there are open areas offering beautiful views of the Doubs valley (from Baume-les-Dames in the west to Hyèvre Paroisse in the east). Some sections require caution but are never vertiginous.

(5) At Combe au Louvier, ignore the path on the left that descends to the Doubs and continue straight ahead.

(6) Begin the fairly steep descent to Hyèvre-Magny.

(7) Leave theGR®59, which heads left, and continue right towards Villers-Saint-Martin.

(8) When you reach the road (D331), turn left, following the yellow and blue markings (Villers-Saint-Martin via the Bois de la Versenne), then turn right onto a wide path that is more pleasant than the road. Stay on this path, which slopes further to the right (elevation 344) and crosses the woods.

(9) As you approach the village (elevation 393), veer left to stay in the forest on this wide path without being tempted by the road you can see a little further down.

(10) Turn right onto Rue des Papillons and at the end of it, turn left then right at the corner of the town hall to return to the starting point (S/E).

A sunny spring hike with magnificent scenery. Sturdy boots and walking sticks recommended. It had rained the day before, which made the steep descent to Hyèvre-Magny very difficult. The rope came in handy; without it, it would have been impossible to get down. Thank you to the volunteers for their work. The return route through the woods had been ruined by forestry work. Thank you to the creator of the route. It is one of the most beautiful walks in the region.

A very beautiful hike, especially the part overlooking the Doubs. Be careful, at the top of the ridge it is difficult to find the GR59 because the path is obstructed by vegetation. There are many uprooted trees on the GR59.

The route starts in Hyèvre Magny, so you can see the lock up close. It's a varied route with some nice climbs and descents (best avoided in wet weather).
The colours were enchanting: a wide variety of flora (including patches of orchids!) throughout the walk, bright yellow rapeseed fields on the banks of the dark blue Doubs river, etc.
In short, a real treat for a beautiful spring day.

A beautiful hike with lovely views of the Doubs river and the tranquillity of the forest are additional assets to enjoy this hike, but be careful of dangerous areas with children on the cliff edge; good footwear is recommended (rocks and roots are hazards and the descent is very steep and slippery). That said, this is a hike that I recommend.

Well-marked route. The trail can be tackled with good trainers or walking boots. In fine weather, the ridge section is slightly shaded, very pleasant, with beautiful views below. Take care with young children, as the trail has some steep cliff edges. The schedule is accurate.

This route is interesting, with superb views of the Doubs valley once you reach the GR59. However, drought has caused many trees to fall, making it difficult for hikers to progress and dangerous due to the potential for trees in precarious positions to fall. The descent to Hièvre-Magny is very steep and dangerous in wet weather and due to fallen trees blocking the hiking trail. The return route through the woods above Villers Saint-Martin is a very good option, especially during heatwaves.
