The Saint-Rigobert Chapel from Berry-au-Bac

Park on Place du Maréchal Leclerc, in front of Berry-au-Bac Town Hall

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn left and walk down Avenue du Général de Gaulle (D1044) on the pavement on the even-numbered side until you reach the third bridge over the Canal latéral à l'Aisne 550 m further on (the first bridge crosses the River Aisne, the second the canal's supply channel).

(1) Immediately after the bridge, cross the D1044 (caution: heavy traffic and no pedestrian crossing), go down the embankment and take a path that runs alongside the canal. Continue for 2,500 metres until you reach a bridge over the canal.

(2) Turn left and follow Chemin dit des Vaches for about 150 metres until you reach a T-junction.

(3) Turn left again and enter the hamlet of Gernicourt via Rue de Pontavert.

(4) At the next junction, turn right and pass in front of the town hall annex.

(5) Go around the church on the right, taking Rue de l'Église and Rue du Calvaire in succession. Continue along Rue de l'Église for about 50 metres in the opposite direction to the first passage.

(5) Before the town hall annex, turn right, then 70 metres further on, turn left into Rue de la Station until you reach Rue du Lavoir (D1140). Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead into Chemin des Crayettes. Continue for 500 metres.

(6) At the edge of a wood, turn right (wooden sign indicating "Chapelle Saint-Rigobert") and climb the rural path (fairly steep slope) for 200 metres to reach the Chapelle Saint-Rigobert. Continue along the gravel path between two rows of trees until you reach the D1140.

(7) Turn left and continue for about 50 metres.

(8) Turn right onto a grassy country lane and continue for 600 metres until you reach the Chemin rural de Gernicourt à Cormicy.

(9) Turn left and continue for 700 metres, ignoring another rural track on the left, until you reach a crossroads near a pumping station.

(10) Turn 90° to the left, ignore the first path on the right and continue straight ahead until you reach a pumping station (small building on the right). Ignore a second path on the right and continue straight ahead for 400 metres.

(11) At the next intersection, turn left and climb the path to return to the D1140.

(12) Follow it to the right, walk alongside the National Necropolis and you will come out onto the D1044. Cross this road - Caution! Heavy traffic.

(13) Follow it to the left.

(1) Continue on the pavement to return to Place du Maréchal Leclerc (S/E).
