Park in the village square, near the town hall.
(S/E) Take the small road south, Chemin de la Baume, towards La Balme.
(1) At the first fork, after about 500 m, take the path climbing to the right, then go through a gate and take the DFCI track on the left. Continue along this stony track for about 500 m until you reach the Gorges du Gardon sign.
(2) Follow the small path to the right (signs for “Gorges du Gardon” and “La Balme”). This pleasantly shaded path offers some lovely views. Continue along this winding path which leads down to the Gardon.
(3) Climb up to the small chapel and, if you’re lucky enough to be there when it’s open, you can take the shortcut through the cave. Otherwise, you’ll need to head back down towards the river and follow it along the rocks to find the path again (the trail isn’t always very visible; look around carefully)
The climb is a bit tricky and you’ll sometimes need to use your hands, but take a break to turn round and admire the valley!
Once at the top, continue straight on. The narrow path joins the stony track from the start; follow it to the left.
(4) At the next three-way junction, veer to the right. Once in front of the vineyard, continue to the left to reach the first fork on the way out
(1) Turn right and head back to the town hall car park (S/E).
. The chapel and crossing the cave in the dark with a mobile phone torch was wonderful, otherwise it would have been impossible.
