The Pianellu Waterfall and La Punta di Caldane

A little-known but magnificent waterfall. It is situated on the outskirts of the village of Pianello on the D16, on the road to Matra, just past the bridge. It is an oasis of coolness and flows in the shade of trees so leafy that they barely let any sunlight through.
Next comes Punta di Caldane, offering a magnificent view of the sea, passing through the forgotten hamlet of Saint-Vincent and its chapel, then the I Peri sheepfolds. You can, of course (!!), shorten the walk.

Description of the walk

Park at the bridge over the River Bravona. Coming from Pianello, the car park is on the left. Otherwise, coming from Matra, it’s on the right. There’s a small car park just after or before the bridge.

(S/E) Cross the D16 and the bridge over the Bravona.

(1) At the crossroads, head towards the waterfall (10 mins): there are no signposts but it’s easy to find. Follow the River Bravona to the waterfall.

(2) Take the same path back, then follow the D16 towards Poggio. You’ll come to the first Calvary tomb.

(3) Turn right onto the path to reach the village of Poggio.

(4) Head towards Pinzalone on the Mare a Mare Nord trail (orange markings). Along the way, you’ll pass
another Calvary tomb and then the Canale stream to reach the crossroads at St Vincent’s Chapel.

(5) Continue along the path to the left, crossing the River Bravona, towards the Chapel of Saint Vincent. Reach the chapel.

(6) To the right of the chapel, between two walls, take the path which begins to wind its way uphill to reach the Péri stream. Turn right towards the Péri stream, cross it and head for its source.

(7) Turn left towards the Péri sheepfolds. You’ll reach them quickly.

(8) Continue along the path towards the Péri huts and, at the next crossroads, turn right to reach them.

(9) Continue due north to reach Punta di Caldane after a steep climb.

(10) Begin the return journey along the same route, perhaps making a short circular loop around the summit pasture (option shown on the map). Return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

For the waterfall, it’s advisable to wear walking shoes. The path is slippery and steep (a 10-minute walk).
Please note: the route indicated by Visorando to reach the waterfall by road is not the one I took; if you follow that route, the waterfall will be on the right after the bridge and before the village of Pianello.

Route mapped out on the ground using a Twonav Sportiva 2 GPS. To avoid getting lost, it is advisable to bring the IGN map: 4351OT.

There is plenty of water along the route at the Péri spring (7), but as this is about 4 km from the waterfall, make sure you have enough water in hot weather.

Warning!!! The Punta di Caldane is particularly treacherous when clouds shroud the summit, which is relatively common: it is then difficult, even for locals, to find your way back, given the numerous valleys branching off from the summit and the lack of paths and cairns leading to the cross. Several walkers have already found themselves in villages or on roads far removed from their starting point! In such situations, a GPS or an IGN map are the only ways to find your way out. As I have recorded the route there, I won’t face this problem.

Worth a visit

The village of Pianello.
The chestnut trees of Pianello.
The forgotten hamlet of Saint-Vincent and the chapel.
The sheepfolds at Péri.
From Punta di Caldane, a view of the Etang de Diana.
The sheepfolds at Funtana Ghjalata.

Good evening,
As I mentioned, it’s best to have a sat-nav or a map to complete this hike (La Punta di Caldane) in good conditions. The hike was done on the ground, so the route is based on the actual path and not plotted on a map as many people do.

Kind regards

A walk that’s very well signposted on Visio Rando, but much less clearly marked out on the ground.
The route is marked in orange from the start until the bridge crossing the first river, then follow the yellow markings.
Climb up to the sheepfold, after which there are no further markings. Just head straight towards the summit by feel.
The view from the summit is magnificent – it’s well worth the effort.

The entrance to the waterfall path is just to the right as you come off the bridge. It is marked on the ground by an orange dot.
As for the path that starts at the wayside cross (described as a grave in the guide), it is closed off by a locked gate at the entrance to the village. It is best to park at the top of the village.

The end of the first path (waterfall in the village) leads to a local resident’s property, who has blocked off access (confirmed by the village roadmender: I had to insist politely to be allowed through…). It’s best to set off from the village now. Follow the yellow markings, then the orange ones (mare a mare), then the yellow ones
to the upper plateau; the yellow markings fade a little before the summit… the GPS track proves useful.
As predicted, the clouds rolled in and obscured the summit shortly after I began my descent at around 12.30 pm.

A stunning waterfall,
with a path that’s a bit tricky to find,
but what a treat!
