The Batteries Hautes circular loop

The advantage of Grenoble is that just 15 minutes from the city centre, you can go for a hike in the low mountains. Here’s a short circular route to get fit before spring, or a family walk to get up high and enjoy the views.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of Place de la Liberté in Saint-Martin-d'Hères.

(S/E) Cross the road, heading east, to find thePR® sign: Saint-Martin-d'Hères. Continue along the street, towards Le Murier / Les Collodes, until you reach the Chaberte sign.

(1) Take the dirt track on the left that runs between two houses, towards Le Murier / Les Collodes, and climb steeply eastwards. You will come out onto a tarmac road.

(2) Turn right onto it to reach the sign for Les Collodes.

(3) Take the road opposite, which follows the yellow-markedPR® trail, to reach the junction with the Le Murier sign.

(4) Stay on the road opposite, which turns right, and, about a hundred metres further on, you’ll reach the junction with the ‘Au Cret’ sign.

(5) Continue straight ahead along the track, pass a mast, then reach the Y-junction at the sign for Les Combettes.

(6) Leave the tarmac road here and continue to the right along the dirt track which climbs gradually through the forest. You will reach another multi-way junction at the Col du Gourlu, indicated by a sign.

(7) Turn right onto the path that goes round the hill to reach the Batteries Hautes.

(8) Begin the descent to a closed gate.

(9) Turn right onto the grassy path running parallel to the road. After a circular bend, you’ll rejoin the tarmac road.

(10) Look for the yellow markings on a tree on the left, continue along the road to the left to reach the hamlet of Le Bigot and walk through it until you see the ‘Le Bigot’ sign at the exit.

(11) Turn right and head downhill. Ignore the various private paths on your left. A few hundred metres further on, you will rejoin the tarmac road. Follow it straight ahead to reach the junction with the Collodes sign you passed on the way out.

(3) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there to return to the car park at Place de la Liberté in Saint-Martin-d'Hères (S/E).

We ended up stopping at Murier Park (with my two daughters, aged 5 and 7) and didn't complete the loop.
The weather was parish specific to Brittany

thank you very much

A hike completed using a GPS track, taking 2 hours 20 minutes. A pleasant surprise, with a path that runs largely through open countryside and woodland, offering varied views of the mountains, all just a few kilometres from Grenoble. A steady climb, with trees blocking the path between the start and point 1. A pretty waterfall with a good flow in May. The path can be very muddy after rain, so wear suitable footwear. A few information boards along the way

In fact, we took a slightly different route: at the Col de Gourlu, we headed straight down to Le Bigot. On leaving the hamlet, we turned left and made our way towards Camp de Poisat. From there, it was a rather monotonous return journey to the cemetery and Saint Martin d'Hères Village. That’s 400 metres in elevation gain and 9 kilometres.
In wet weather, which was the case, the prospect of walking down the Collodes-SMH section didn’t exactly fill us with enthusiasm...

Thank you for this very enjoyable walk, with its varied landscapes and views.
There is an error in items (5) and (6) of the description, as the tarmac road ends about 200 metres before the mast.
