Description of the walk

The car park is near Urcuray church, on the street perpendicular to the D10.

(S/E) Follow the road south-east. At the first intersection, turn left, along a stream, until the road veers away from the stream and starts to climb.

(1) Leave the road to go through a metal gate on the right and follow a path that runs alongside the stream. After passing some ruins, continue along the path that climbs up into the valley.
In the forest, at the Y-junction, take the path on the right. Above a waterfall, a trail takes over.
After a gate, it continues to climb to the left or right of the stream, crossing a few muddy sections (water catchments), until it reaches an intersection in the middle of several water pipes.

(2) Ignore the paths to the left (ford) and right, and continue straight ahead on the path along the river. The forest gradually thins out. Continue to an electricity pylon, with a Y-junction.

(3) Take the grassy path opposite to finish climbing up the valley on a wide path that winds under the power line to the Col d'Iramalda.

(4) Ignore the road and take the path on the left. After 50 metres, at the barn, turn left again onto a wide dirt track that climbs up the western flank of Ursuya.

(5) Pass higher up, under a beautiful barn, and at a horizontal section (Pilotaxilo), turn right, leaving the main path for a dirt track that climbs to the summit along a ridge that is initially grassy, then stony, and then grassy again.

(6) At the junction with a wider grassy path, continue straight ahead, then turn right to reach the summit of Mount Ursuya.

(7) Continue the descent northwards along the ridge. Pass to the right of a small rocky outcrop and you will arrive near a pylon.

(8) Turn left onto a track and follow it to altitude 438, where you will find an old sheepfold, now converted into a dwelling.

(9) Turn right, then immediately left onto the path marked "Retour Urcuray". With a beautiful view of the Hasparren neighbourhoods, it goes around a dome. When the path opens onto a fern-covered meadow, keep to the rightmost track to descend steeply towards a grassy plateau. Climb back up for a moment between the gorse bushes, then reach a T-junction. Continue right on the wide path. At the four Basque houses, go 20 m to the right.

(10) Turn left onto the road that descends to the Gillamuren Borda farm. Turn right in front of the shed to descend onto a grassy path until you reach a Y-junction near a ruin.

(11) Take the path on the left to rejoin a tarmac road that descends to the road you took on the way there.

(1) Return opposite, via the same route you took on the way there, to the car park (S/E).

A pleasant, easy hike... Not very busy on 2 January, but probably much busier in fine weather!
Muddy sections at the start of the climb in wet weather...

Very pleasant route, gentle climb, except at the end, but the view is splendid! No difficulty finding the way thanks to the very reliable GPX track.

I confirm point 1, the path is almost impassable (impossible without walking sticks) due to mud. There is mud until you leave the forest, but it's passable. The trees have been cut down, thank goodness. Circular route to do in summer. I much prefer the circular route from the blueberry farm. Everything else is fine. Summit with an extraordinary view from the Pic du Midi de Bigorre to the ocean.

A beautiful, bucolic route that starts in the forest and runs alongside the river. However, in Ursuia and Uurcuray-Urkoi, there is water. And there is a lot of water, even on the trail, which is therefore very muddy in places, especially at the start. Gaiters are recommended for those who have them, at least in winter, and perhaps afterwards too. Another downside is that there are three or four fallen or uprooted trees on the trail, probably from the last storm. But you can walk under or over the branches. Otherwise, it's a gentle climb up Ursuia and a very pleasant descent in the beautiful weather on Saturday 16 November.

The signposting is very good at the start of the walk but becomes rather complicated halfway through. Ask other people you meet for advice, as they will also be looking for the way after a lovely walk in clear weather.
