The Ill and the Schiltigheim ponds

A delightful walk on the outskirts of the city, allowing you to explore the banks of the Ill and the ponds that lend a wild, natural feel to this urban area. You’ll spot plenty of birds (small passerines, geese and seagulls) as well as signs of beavers.
An easy walk to enjoy in any season, though undoubtedly more pleasant in summer and in dry weather (paths can get muddy in places).
You can get there and back on the E tram from the city centre.

Description of the walk

Starting point: in front of the Palais des Droits de l’Homme (Droits de l’Homme tram stop – Line E).

(S) Head north-west along Quai Ernest Bevin to the Joseph Bech Bridge.

(1) At the bridge, go down the stairs to reach the Quai du Canal de la Marne au Rhin. At the end of the quay, turn slightly right then immediately take the footbridge on the left to cross the Aare and reach the left bank of the Ill.

(2) The left bank of the Ill will be your guide for quite some time until you reach the Pont Phario.

(3) Head back up to road level and continue along the Ill on Rue du Marais, which you leave on the right at the Lycée Marc Bloch tram stop.

(4) Join the Ill footpath marked with Blue Diamonds, which, towards the end, moves away from the river before reaching the end of the path.

(5) Continue along the Ill path to the left to go round the Vogelau. After about a hundred metres, the path turns right to reach the Schiltigheim Pond.

(6) Turn right and walk along the edge of the pond on a strip of land between the Ill and the pond (still on the Ill trail). When you reach the end of the pond, follow the Ill for about a hundred metres, then continue along the path that veers off to the left to join a tarmac road.

(7) Head right along Rue du Château d’Angleterre, then turn left onto the first wide path which crosses a field with a solitary tree in the middle.

(8) At the tree, the path turns right. Continue along this path and enter the woods. At the end of the small wood, turn left, then left again at the other end of the wood. Then follow the path which leaves the woods and runs alongside the Bischheim gravel pit (a water sports centre where you can get something to eat during the summer season).

(9) At the end of the gravel pit and the car park, continue left, still following the water’s edge, until you reach the junction with Rue du Château d’Angleterre.

(10) At the junction, turn right and follow the street, first through gardens, then through a rather uninteresting industrial estate until you reach the Maison de Retraite de l’Ill, where the street turns right to join Rue du Marais. Take this street to the left before turning right onto Rue du Hohenbourg to reach the Ried tram stop (E), from where line E will take you back to your starting point (S) Ried tram stop.

A very interesting route because it offers a taste of the countryside right in the city, without having to travel very far.
It’s also a surprising route because, having lived in Strasbourg for 50 years, I was only familiar with a small part of it.

Well done to the organiser

A superb walk just outside Strasbourg. A mix of countryside, woodland and gravel pits. A peaceful route, far from the roads. All you can hear is birdsong. After point 10, on Rue du Château d’Angleterre, we joined point 6 and headed back to the starting point at the Palais des Droits de l’Homme. This extends the walk by about 3 km. We went on the walk on a Tuesday and saw very few people.
