Discovering the cul-de-sacs of old Strasbourg

Stroll through the historic centre of Strasbourg and discover twelve cul-de-sacs, which are unusual and little-known corners of the Alsatian capital. The route takes you through the alleys and streets of the Grande Île, from Rue de la Nuée-Bleue to Ponts-Couverts, via Place Broglie, the cathedral, the banks of the Ill and La Petite France. Description of the walk

Departure from the "Ancienne Synagogue/Les Halles" tram stop (lines A and D).

(S) Walk along the trees on Quai Kléber, keeping the Ill river on your right. Pass the Pont du Marché and Pont de Paris bridges and continue along the Ill.

(1) Take the next bridge, the Pont du Faubourg de Pierre, to cross the Ill. On the other side, continue straight ahead along Rue de la Nuée Bleue. Take the second left, Impasse de la Corneille. Retrace your steps and turn left again onto Rue de la Nuée Bleue. Continue straight ahead on this street, passing Place Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune on your right (beautiful church) and reaching the eastern end of Place Broglie.

(2) Turn left and pass the tram station. At the corner of the Banque de France headquarters, turn left onto Impasse de Bischheim. Retrace your steps, turn left and then turn left onto Impasse de l'Écrevisse. Retrace your steps and continue along Place Broglie.

At the traffic lights, turn right into Rue de la Comédie (Opera on the left). Cross Rue Brûlée and continue along Rue des Charpentiers. After No. 16, turn right into Impasse des Charpentiers. Retrace your steps, turn right and you will immediately come to a crossroads.

(3) Follow Rue des Juifs to the left. At the next intersection, continue alongRue du Parchemin to a junction at an unnamed square. Return to Rue Brûlée and follow it to the left. Take the first right, Impasse des Maçons. Retrace your steps to the square. Go straight ahead along Rue de l'Arc-en-ciel until you reach Place Saint-Etienne, at the foot of the church of the same name.

(4) Turn left onto Rue de la Courtine and you will soon reach Impasse des Pierres on the left. Turn back towards the square.

(4) Walk a few metres and turn right onto Rue des Pucelles. At the end, you will come to Rue des Juifs. Turn left and follow this street until you reach the crossroads you passed earlier.

(3) Continue straight ahead, still on Rue des Juifs. At number 4, turn right onto Rue des Échasses. At the end, turn right into the impasse of the same name. Turn back and go straight ahead to Rue du Dôme. Then first turn left then right to visit Impasse du Tiroir.

Retrace your steps and follow Rue du Dôme to the right until you reach the chevet of the cathedral. Then turn right along the building until you reach the foot of its north tower (Maison Kammerzell on the right).

(5) Turn left and cross the cathedral forecourt. Continue along Rue du Maroquin. Cross Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait and go straight onalong Impasse de la Grande Boucherie. Go down the steps and you will reach the banks of the Ill.

(6) Follow the towpath to the right and pass under the Pont du Corbeau bridge. At the next bridge, climb a staircase. At the top, turn left to cross the tram tracks and take Quai Saint-Thomas. Pass the bridge of the same name and descend towards the towpath.

(7) At the next bridge (Pont Saint-Martin), climb the steps. Continue straight ahead to the Petite France lock. Continue straight ahead, then return to the quay. Turn left and cross Place Benjamin Six. Continue along Rue du Bain aux Plantes, ignoring the bridge on the left and the alleys on the right. Pass a large car park on the right and turn left into Impasse des Orfèvres.

Retrace your steps, follow Rue du Bain aux Plantes to the left and immediately turn left into the cul-de-sac of the same name. A gap in this cul-de-sac on the right-hand side provides access to Quai de la Bruche (imposing plane tree). At the end, climb a staircase.

(8) Turn left onto a covered bridge. On the other side, turn right onto Impasse de la Grande Écluse to reach the western tip of the island (Vauban Dam opposite). Retrace your steps.

(8) Continue straight ahead on Quai Turckheim. At the foot of the Tour du Bourreau, turn right onto Rue Adolphe Seyboth. At the next intersection, turn left, still on Rue Adolphe Seyboth. Cross Grand'Rue, leave the Église Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux on your right and immediately jointhe Alt Winmärik tram station (lines B and F) (E).
