Holywell to Backworth - Angel's Way

(S) In front of the Milbourne Arms, at the junction with the A192 walk down the bank.

(1) At the end of the wall, cross the road and take the footpath opposite heading in a southerly direction crossing the old bridge over the Seaton Birn and following the path around to the right, this is called The Close Holywell.

(2) Follow this path keeping Seaton Burn on your right-hand side. When you reach a junction in the path, bear left onto the wider track heading in a southerly direction. This will bend sharply around to the right.

(3) The wider track will end in another path junction, turn left into a southerly direction and follow this path.

(4) Continue in a southerly direction, you will pass a track on your right and a cattery on your left. Just after the cattery (Holywell Grange Farm), turn right and follow this path. This path will zigzag to the right, to the left, to the right and to the left again around the field boundaries.

(5) When you reach the railway lines, turn right and follow the path along the edge of the railway for about 200m, then take the tunnel left under the railway lines and follow the path southwards again. Carry on straight ahead, you will then join Fisher Road, continue on this road to Backworth Lane (B1322).

(6) When you reach Backworth Lane, turn left, walk along Backworth Lane until you reach Station Road where you turn right and continue until you reach the Backworth Social Club, turn right into the lane which leads to Backworth Hall (E).

• Transport: You will need to park on the road if parking at either Backworth or Holywell. I suggest you park at Northumberland Park metro station which has paid parking, this is near the end of the walk. Either way, the Arriva 54 (Newcastle to Whitley Bay) service leaves from Backworth Hall to Earsdon Road/Station Road stop near to the Northumberland Park metro, or its about a 20 minute walk. GoNorthEast 19 (North Shields to Ashington) service calls at Northumberland Park, the Earsdon Road/Station Road Stop and Holywell.
• Facilities: Refreshments can be taken at the start of the walk at the Milbourne Arms or at the end of the walk at Backworth Hall. There is a Sainsbury's next to Northumberland Park metro.
• Accessibility: This walk includes some sections across fields which may not be accessible for all.

• This is the section of the Angel's Way one of the Northern Saints' pilgrimage routes which starts in Holywell and ends in Backworth. This section is rural passing through agricultural land. This can be combined with the previous section (Seaton Sluice to Holywell) or the next section (Backworth to Killingworth) for a longer walk.
