Izon-la-Bruisse - Orpierre

Another beautiful stage to reach the medieval village of Orpierre, surrounded by its famous cliffs. Straddling the Céans and Méouge valleys, this time it is the endless, narrow Chabre ridge that serves as the guiding thread for the hike, culminating in the picturesque Col Saint-Ange and its climbing walls.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Tour of the Baronnies Provençales

Description of the walk

(S) From Izon Nature, take the small tarmac road heading north, following the red and yellow GRP® markings. At a hairpin bend in the road, you will reach the Fontaine de Bayle.

(1) Leave the road and continue opposite on the GRP® to reach the Col de Muze, where you will rejoin the road and the GRP®.

(2) Take them opposite. A few hundred metres after the pass, leave the road again and take the path on the left. Enjoy beautiful views of the Méouge valley below, and in particular the village of Lachau. Reach Col Saint-Jean.

(3) Take the GRP® opposite and climb gently uphill. After passing through a beautiful beech forest, you will soon reach the Crête de la Montagne de Chabre, then a crossroads.

(4) Keep right on the GRP® and continue along the endless, narrow Crête de Chabre, passing a few small steep sections, but none of them particularly dizzying or technical. The views of the neighbouring valleys and the Alpine and Drôme peaks are once again extraordinary. Next, reach the GRP® crossroads (elevation 1203).

(5) Continue straight ahead on the GRP® Tour des Baronnies Provençales to finish this ridge walk at the Col de Saint-Ange.

(6) Turn 180° to the left here to leave the ridge and, via the GR®546, marked in white and red, begin the descent. Arrive at the discovery trail car park.

(7) Continue on the GR® to finish the descent to the village of Orpierre, today's stage. (E)

Notes

Hike in the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park, ideally in April-May-June and September-October. In summer, it can be very hot in the Baronnies Provençales, and in winter, some paths may be impassable or snow-covered.

Set off each day with a good supply of water, as most fountains are not checked and some may have a very low flow rate in all seasons.
