Itero de la Vega - Carrión de los Condes

Fifty-ninth stage of the Camino de Santiago. A long, flat stage with no particular difficulty, except that you walk alongside long stretches of busy road. You enter the province of Palencia and pass through several towns and villages, including Boadilla del Camino with its Gothic Rollo and Frómista, where you can admire the four-lock system of the Canal de Castilla. After entering the autonomous community of Castile and León, you discover the town of Carrión de los Condes with its extraordinary Church of Santa María del Camino and its old town.

Worth a visit

(9) Boadilla, a 10th-century town, is semi-circular in shape and the route skirts it to the north along an old wall. The austere Gothic Church of Santa Maria (14th and 15th centuries), with its square tower but rich in paintings and sculptures, houses a Romanesque baptismal font. Behind its polygonal apse, a highly ornate column stands in the centre of a square, on a base with narrow steps and topped by a lantern: the rollo gotico (a 15th-century pillory, according to Eusebio Goicoechea).

(17) In Fromista, the route joins and runs alongside the Canal de Castilla. This lengthy structure was built between 1753 and 1849, serving both to irrigate the land and to provide power for factories and mills. At the entrance to the town, you cross the canal via a footbridge, above a spectacular group of oval locks (15), forming a series of waterfalls.

(33) Carrión de los Condes: worth visiting is the 13th-century Convent of Santa Clara (renovated in the 17th century), home to cloistered Poor Clares (accommodation available). The Santa María Gate and a section of wall are remnants of the medieval city walls.
