Description of the walk

Start at the banks of the Rupt-de-Mad, near the Arnaville pumping station, accessible via the lane that branches off at 203 Rue de la Chapelle.

(S/E) From the car park, cross the stream via the small bridge on the right, then immediately afterwards, turn left onto the tarmac path. This continues along Chemin de la Gare to the main road.

(1) Turn right, staying on the pavement until you reach a pedestrian crossing. Cross it to reach a path on the opposite side running alongside the main road (Rue de Pagny-sur-Moselle) for about a hundred metres.

(2) Turn left onto the path that goes under the railway line, then past some greenhouses and the sewage treatment plant. After a wide bend to the left, cross the bridge over an old canal (Canal Latéral à la Moselle) and continue straight on until you reach a monument erected in memory of American soldiers from the Second World War.

(3) Turn right and follow the Moselle. Stay on the riverbank, ignoring the turn-offs to the right, until you reach the old canal.

(4) Take the path on the left that runs alongside the old canal. It approaches the canalised Moselle and reaches a large lock on the left-hand side.

(5) Continue for 100m, cross to the right over the old canal bridge and turn left into Rue Jules Ferry. Atthe first junction, turn right, cross the railway line via the footbridge, then turn right again and follow the railway line to the SNCF station.

(6) Walk past the station and take the second street on the left (Avenue du Maréchal Ney) until you reach the main road (Rue Anatole France), which you cross. Continue straight ahead along Rue Gambetta and walk uphill until you reach a statue of the Virgin Mary on your left. From there, follow theGR®5, which climbs up to a viewpoint.

(7) Take a short detour to admire the twisted beech trees, then continue to follow theGR®5signposts until you reach a wide, stony forest track.

(8) Leave theGR®5and turn right onto the stony path.

(9) After 250m, at the crossroads, take the path on the right, then right again at the next junction and finally left, staying on the path.

(10) At the large crossroads at elevation 331, leave the track and take a path on the left that descends slightly.

(11) 250m further on, take the path branching off to your right and follow it until you reach a wider track at a cross (Croix de Virenne).

(12) Follow this track down (be careful, the descent is quite steep) until you reach the telecommunications masts.

(13) Just before the masts, take the path branching off to your left until you reach a small bridge over the railway line on your right.

(14) Cross the small bridge and turn right, then left to rejoin the tarmac path used on the way out. Follow it to the left until you reach the bridge over the Rupt-de-Mad, which leads back to the car park at the start (S/E).

Worth a visit

(2) Monument in memory of the American soldiers who died crossing the river during the liberation of Metz (August 1944).

(4) You can take a very short detour (20m) to see the large-capacity lock on the Moselle.

Natural curiosity: "Hêtres tortillards". Trees just over two metres tall, estimated to be around 100 years old (2018).

Before reaching the viewpoint (5), you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of Pagny and the Moselle valley.

A lovely walk with no particular difficulties, through beautiful, well-maintained forests. The stretch through Pagny-sur-Moselle felt a bit long, but I soon forgot all about it.

Good evening. Just a small issue with point "11": it tells you to take a "path", but it’s actually more of a track suitable for 4x4s. But I eventually found the right way thanks to my compass. I’m hiking alone, so it’s up to me to make the right decisions. But thank you for this route. I was familiar with part of it, but I discovered the Virenne cross. See you soon. MAMAUDE

A lovely walk, and in fine weather too... The first section runs along the Moselle (on a concrete path that’s a bit long but makes for brisk walking), ending at the Grand Gabarit lock in Pagny-sur-Moselle, followed by a second section through the forest, where we can indeed admire two 75-year-old twisted beech trees, lost amongst their taller counterparts...
Easy to do, with very little elevation gain...
