Description of the walk

In Chouvigny, park at the top of the village in a small car park near the town hall, on the other side of the road. Information boards about the hikes.

(S/E) Walk down Route de la Mairie for about 50 metres and, at the signpost, turn right onto Impasse de la Croix des Gardes and continue along the path that leads to the cross (viewpoint). Continue along the path until you reach an intersection with a signpost.

(1) Follow thePR®®42to the right. Pass through the hamlet of Granges Basses. At the fork in the road, follow the left fork towards Granges Hautes, cross this hamlet and continue to reach Le Tillot.

(2) At the first road junction, turn right. Shortly afterwards, ignore a path on the left, then take the next one. Further on, ignore another path on the left.

(3) At the fork in the road, take the right-hand path. Further on, ignore a path on the right and continue to the hamlet of Maunoux.

(4) Turn left onto the road, then left again at the next T-junction and, shortly afterwards, take a grassy path on the right (just before the poultry farm). Negotiate the bend in the path to the right and you will reach the hamlet of Le Méry. Turn left onto the road, cross the hamlet of Chez Giraudet and arrive at an intersection with a road (D116).

(5) Cross and follow Chemin des Rivaux opposite. At the T-junction, turn right. Just after a poultry farm, you will reach a four-way crossroads.

No markings

(6) Turn left onto the unmarked path. Cross a stream, the Cèpe, at three beautiful poplar trees, walk up about 50 metres and arrive at a T-junction. Turn right and, at the next fork in the road, keep right again, with the Cèpe below on your right. Further on, at a T-junction, follow the path on the right , which quickly leads to a road at a place called Étang Roux. All that remains of the pond is a marshy area fed by the Cèpe and a tributary.

Follow the road to the right and, at the bend, continue straight on along the Route de la Buse. Further on, ignore the Impasse de la Buse on the left and you will arrive at the intersection you passed on the way there.

(6) Continue on Route de la Buse to the left. Reach the hamlet of Cougeat and, at the crossroads, continue straight ahead. You will come to an intersection with a signpost.

(7) Turn left. At the road, continue along the grassy path opposite, crossing another road. At the next intersection, follow the road opposite and you will reach the hamlet of La Grande Lande.

(8) Turn right onto Route des Landes, keep right at the fork and then, when the road begins to curve to the left at the exit of the hamlet, continue straight ahead on the path. Further on, after enjoying a view of Chouvigny Castle, ignore the path on the left that descends to the road, then a path that climbs to the right. Continue straight ahead to finally reach the road, opposite the church.

Trail1 or just Trail

(9) Cross the street, turn right to pass in front of the church, then immediately turn right onto a path that passes in front of a house. The path becomes a trail, descending steeply to join the D915 road along the Sioule (opposite the ruins of a mill). Follow the road to the right.

(10) Further on, on the left side of the road, a path with a few artificial and natural steps leads up to a small viewpoint overlooking the gorges. Go back down to the road and continue to the left.

(11) Just after a bridge, turn onto a path that climbs to the right. This beautiful path, lined with dry stone walls, leads to an intersection you passed earlier in the hike.

(1) Turn right and retrace your steps, passing by the Croix des Gardes again, to return to the car park (S/E).

A very pleasant walk allowing you to discover the heights of Chouvigny and La Sioule.
However, the circular at point 6 is difficult to access because many trees have fallen across the path following a mini tornado, according to what the locals told us.

Very pleasant walks. Varied landscapes with flower-filled meadows and forest sections. Views of the magnificent castle and a walk along the banks of the Sioule. It is also possible to shorten the route if necessary.
