Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the town hall, located above it on the D284.

(S/E) From the car park, head south and walk downhill. When you reach the town hall, turn right onto a small road that runs alongside the wall. The road soon gives way to a path that climbs towards a cross, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of Chouvigny and its castle. Walk up to a junction.

(1) Then take the Sentier des Murailles on the left. The path is steep. Walk downhill to the D915.

(2) Follow the road to the left and walk alongside the Sioule river below on your right for about 800 m.

You’ll pass the Roc Armand viewpoint, which is accessed via a steep staircase to the side.

After passing the sign marking the entrance to Chouvigny and just before a hotel-restaurant, climb a narrow, steep stone staircase on the left. Continue along a path to reach the church.

(3) You’ll come out onto the D284; follow it to the left

(S/E) Walk back up to the town hall car park

Notes

Free parking.

Paths are poorly maintained or not maintained at all. Not recommended for families with young children, as there is a significant risk of falling. The path is mostly steep and rugged. Walkers must proceed in single file, and it is impractical to hold the hands of children who are less independent.

Risk of slipping in places. Strongly not recommended if it has rained or if there is snow or black ice.

A walk suggested by Val de Sioule and Allier-Auvergne-Tourisme.

I agree with some of the comments: the path is slippery after rain, steep and poorly maintained, but it offers a beautiful view of the castle and the valley

As two retirees, we followed this route to get a view of the Sioule Gorges. There is a view from the cross, not long after the town hall. Then there is a long descent towards the D915 in the forest. There are some pleasant, more or less flat sections, but also some very steep descents, sometimes on smooth rocks. It was dry, so there wasn't too much risk of slipping, but you have to watch where you put your feet at all times.
When we reached the road, we looked for a way to "follow the Sioule below on the right", but there was no access to leave the road. In fact, the yellow markings are on the road, and so is the route on Visorando. It's a long stretch that is unpleasant and even dangerous, depending on the season.
The climb up to the church is indeed very steep.
In short, it's a challenging path with a long, uninteresting section. And definitely not recommended when it's wet.
Thank you anyway for the suggestion, which allowed us to see the pretty Chouvigny Castle.

I retraced this walk today under a blazing sun. From my point of view, I had no particular difficulty following the route, which is marked in yellow. There are signposts for this walk at the start and along the way.

Updated description to take previous reviews into account. It’s true that the walk is short but challenging, and that a large part of it is on very steep, rugged terrain… but that’s also part of its charm. However, this means it isn’t suitable for young children.

On this day, the path was generally clear, but its steep nature means that here and there the vegetation can encroach onto the path. Watch out for acacia brambles in particular – they’re like needles!

We went on this hike in August with two children aged 3 and 6 – I might as well say it straight away: it was a bit of a struggle!
As the previous review explains, the paths are littered with brambles and nettles, the descents are quite steep and slippery (we had to hold our 3-year-old daughter’s hand the whole way down), the road isn’t safe to walk along, and finally, the end involves a significant climb.

Note that the start of the walk is pleasant, with the brambles providing plenty of blackberries

Not recommended with young children, but otherwise the scenery is beautiful and it’s quite pleasant for adults. I wouldn’t classify it as ‘easy’ either.

The route is advertised as easy, but I have my doubts: the path is very narrow and completely unkempt, with brambles, nettles and other prickly vegetation everywhere; the ground is very slippery and difficult to walk on. The section on the road is quite dangerous; the verges aren’t maintained, so we have to walk on the road where cars drive very fast and can only see us at the last moment on certain sections. The steps aren’t marked on the ground, so if you don’t keep an eye on the GPS all the time, you can easily get lost. The staircase is very steep; there are handrails to hold on to, but they are covered in brambles. The elevation gain isn’t huge, but it’s concentrated over a very short distance, so it climbs quite steeply at times. I think it would be wiser to rate it as moderate, and personally, I wouldn’t do it with a family and children – the risk of falling is far too high.
If you can look past these drawbacks, the walk is very pleasant and offers some lovely views, especially the view of Chouvigny Castle, which is well worth a visit.
