England Coast Path - Teesmouth to Transporter Bridge

This section of the path winds its way through the industrial Teesmouth area which surprisingly is littered with marshes and nature reserves including RSPB Salthome. A relatively easy path, mostly paved and flat with opportunities to stop and view seals from the specially built hides.

Description der Wandertour

(S) From the Zinc Works Road bus stop walk south towards Stockton along Tees Road.

(1) Cross straight at the roundabout and continue on A178 past the Sewrage Works, Graythorp Industrial Estate and the Oil Storage Depot.

(2) The footpath changes from tarmac to grass at the Huntsman Greatham bus stop. Continue on this grass footpath (Tees Road). There will be a mesh fence with barbed wire to your right.
At the end of the fence, turn right through an A-frame gate and turn left continuing to follow the grass footpath for about 400m before it rejoins the road at the bridge across Greatham Creek. There is a blue sign here indicating walking route to RSPB Saltholme and the transporter bridge.

(3) Cross the bridge. The sculpture at the other side of the bridge is actually the Greatham Creek Seal Hide.
Follow the newly made footpath along the A178, there are lots of information boards here about the marshes. You will then pass the Seal Sands car park. There is a ramp here to another hide if you wish to stop.
When you have finished at the hide, cross the road and take the footpath on the opposite side of the A178 which runs in between 2 fences. Continue passing the pipeline until you reach the roundabout.

(4) Cross straight this roundabout, use extreme caution as there is no footpath for several metres and you will need to navigate the pipelines, barrier and fence to pick up the path behind the hedge on the left side of the road.

(5) If you wish to visit RSPB Saltholme you will need to leave the footpath at the Fire Station and cross the road at the bus stop.
Continue to follow the footpath behind the bus shelter to continue the walk until you cross the wooden footbridge over Holme Fleet.

(6) Follow the path to the left around the water's edge until you reach the railway line, then turn right.
Continue on this grass footpath until you reach Port Clarence road.

(7) Turn left and go under the railway bridge. Follow the cycle path in front of you to get a good view of the Transporter Bridge or follow the road to get a close up look at the gondola. (E)
