Description of the walk

Start : Car park Ward Jackson Park on Park Avenue. (TS26 0DZ) Grid ref. NZ 491 325

(S/E) Exit the car park and turn left and then left again onto The Parade, walking Eastwards. Cross the roundabout and continue Eastwards down Grange Road and then Victoria Road passing the war memorial on your right (1.8 Km).

(1) Turn right (South) onto Stockton Street (A689) and walk past the shopping centre. Cross Park Road and continue past Cameron's Brewery.

(2) Bear right at Stranton Church (All Saints) and walk along Elwick Road passing Stranton Green on your right until you reach Stockton Road. Turn right onto Stockton Road and walk to the roundabout. Bear right around the roundabout and then cross the road into Colwyn Road.

(3) Enter Burn Valley Gardens and walk Westwards through the gardens. You can take either the north side or south side of Burn Valley Beck. There are several bridges if you wish to explore the gardens further. Cross Brinkburn Road via the zebra crossing and continue into the park on the other side of the road (West).

(4) Walkers should continue to follow the path through the park until the end of Burn Valley Beck is reached. Here the path splits, turn right (North) and walk to the park exit on Elwick Road. There is a squeeze gate here which may be unsuitable for wheelchair users.

Alternative Route: On reaching the play park wheelchair users should turn north, leaving the park onto Elwick Road. Turn left and continue down Elwick Road to the waypoint (5).

(5) Turn left (West) onto Elwick Road and cross Catcote Road. Take the footpath opposite. After 150m, take the path to your right (North) exiting on Elwick Road near Briafields.

Alterntative Route: The squeeze gate may not be wide enough for wheelchairs so turn right onto Catcoate Lane and then left into Elwick Road to pick up the route at Briarfields.

(6) Continue West along Elwick Road until you reach the entrance for Ward Jackson Park. Continue around the park passing the cafe and lake on your right-hand side. Walk around the park and exit the park by the toilets onto Park Avenue to return to the car park (S/E)
