Graydon from the cable car

Reach the Graydon mountain pasture and its chapel by first taking the Roc d'Enfer cable car. You will then find yourself in a peaceful environment, surrounded by gentians and grazing cows, with Mont Blanc as a backdrop... The Graydon mountain pasture stretches out at the foot of the majestic Roc d'Enfer, where cows and goats graze peacefully on the lush grass around the small chapel surrounded by a magnificent valley.

Description of the walk

Park at the Roc d'Enfer station. Free parking is available in ample quantities (Route de la Télécabine / Impasse de la Grande Terche). At the ski lift ticket office, purchase a one-way pedestrian ticket (or a return ticket for the alternative route). Price in summer 2025: €5.50 one way and €7.50 return. Take the cable car.

(S) When you exit the cable car, head left (east) towards Joranloup. Pass under a ski lift line and descend along a road to Les Plénays.

(1) Turn right and continue down the road towards Graydon. You will arrive at a sign for "Le Cornet".

(2) Continue straight ahead towards Graydon (you will see the Combe de Graydon and the chapel).

(3) After enjoying the scenery, retrace your steps to Le Cornet.

(2) Turn right to begin the descent towards Saint-Jean-d'Aulps Station. See practical information for the alternative route. Arrive at Les Adrets.

(4) Continue down the road towards Saint-Jean-d'Aulps Station. The path becomes increasingly wooded as you descend. At the end, you will arrive at Les Plans Morets.

(5) Descend the tarmac road, turning right. Follow the signs for "Saint-Jean-d'Aulps Station". Arrive at Valletaz d'en Bas.

(6) A sign indicates to take the footpath/mountain bike trail that descends to the right. Although taking this trail is not a mistake, it is still recommended to stay on the tarmac road because of the high number of mountain bikes/downhill scooters, which make the trail quite dangerous for pedestrians. Continue down the road until you reach a sharp left turn.

(7) Stay on the right-hand side of the road to remain visible to motorists. Continue down the main tarmac road. Do not take the path on the right to reach the "La Chenalettaz" sign just before the crossroads.

(8) Turn left onto the path that goes uphill. The bridge over a stream and the wooden steps that follow make for a pleasant climb. At the end of the path, rejoin the main road that goes up to the resort. Go straight ahead twice and after the bend, keep left to reach the car park (E).

Practical information

Alternative route for the return trip to (3): climb back up to the left to retrace your steps and take the cable car back down (shorter - makes the hike easier).

At the ski lift ticket office, purchase a one-way pedestrian ticket (or a return ticket for the alternative route). Price in summer 2025: €5.50 one way and €7.50 return. The cable car is open during July and August (7 July to 31 August in 2025), from 10:00 to 17:00.

The alternative route (return trip by cable car) has an elevation gain of 189 metres and an elevation loss of the same amount.

The main attraction of this walk is the Alpage de Graydon (4). Then it's up to you whether you want to take the cable car one way or return. The descent is of limited interest.
