Greater Nancy between Dommartin-sous-Amance and the Priory of Blanzey

On the Tour du Grand Nancy route, a circular route between Dommartin-sous-Amance and the Priory of Blanzey in Bouxières-aux-Chênes. Set off along a country lane to reach Laître-sous-Amance with its medieval church. Climb up to Amance via a small, well-maintained path, taking in the village, the listed church, the hilltop of the old fortified castle and the views over the towns north of Nancy, then over the valley of Bouxières-aux-Chênes and Leyr.
Follow a track to reach part of the village of Bouxières-aux-Chênes and head to the Priory of Blanzey.
Then, via a woodland path, take a short walk through the Bois de Blanzey to visit the tower and the old orchards of Crany. Return to the starting point via a field path and a stony track.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at the church in Dommartin-sous-Amance. Parking available.

(S/E) Facing the church, turn left, walk past the fountain and turn left onto Rue Louis Pasteur. Leave the village to reach the cemetery.

(1) After the cemetery, take the path leading downhill to the right, Chemin du Pont du Gué, cross over the Ruisseau des Étangs and continue straight on along the field path.

(2) At the end of the path, turn left and at the first T-junction, turn right between the fence and the orchard. Join a small road and go straight on to reach the church.

(3) Go round the church on the right-hand side and turn left, then right onto Rue Charles de Gaulle.

(4) Follow the first street on the left, called Chemin de la Poterne, which turns into an uphill track. Continue straight on to reach Amance.

(5) At the end of the path, at the top of the hill, turn right onto Rue Saint Jean, walk past the church and take a short detour onto the forecourt to enjoy the view. Then follow the first street on the left, Rue Saint-Joseph, passing beneath the hill where the old fortified castle once stood.

(6) At the end of the street, turn left onto Rue Saint-Charles, with a viewpoint on your right. At the Y-junction, keep right and continue straight on to reach the junction with Route de Laître (D37).

(7) Ignore this road and continue straight on along Rue de la Porte en Bas, towards Bouxières-aux-Chênes, taking the path to the right of the road. Continue straight on until you reach the cemetery and go past it.

(8) Take the first path on the left and join the D913.

(9) Turn left for about ten metres, then right to cross the road carefully and take the field path leading uphill along the edge of the woods.

(10) At the second T-junction, take the field path on the left. Join Rue Lyautet and head downhill, turning left.

(11) At the fountain, turn right onto Rue des Violettes. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and take the first path on the left to reach the priory.

(12) At the end of the path with the signpost, turn left, then right, go through the gate and enter the Prieuré de Blanzey to visit the chapel: this is private property, so please respect the premises. Exit through the other gate and head right.

(12) Continue the walk along the ascending path. Carry on straight ahead at the four-way junction and join a stony track.

(13) Follow it, turning right.

(14) Take the first path on the left, leaving the Grand Nancy signposting, and at the next Y-junction, turn right onto the wide path at the edge of the woods. Continue straight on along this wide path, making sure to keep heading in the same direction, passing under the high-voltage power line.

(15) At the end of the path and before leaving the woods, take a sharp left onto the descending stony track.

(16) At the Y-junction where two tracks meet, continue the descent by keeping to the right, then take the first small path leading down to the right at a 90° angle. Cross over the stream, join a wide forest track and continue to the left. Stay on the wide track. Pass in front of the Tour du Crany and the remains of the old orchards and continue straight on along the lovely track, ignoring a path branching off to the right.

(17) As you leave the woods, take the lovely stony track to the left and, once at the end, turn left again.

(18) At the bottom of the hill, cross over the Ruisseau de Grencey; good luck tackling the uphill track to reach the cemetery. Just after the cemetery, follow the field path down to the right and join the D913 at a place called Pierre Moulin.

(19) Cross it carefully and continue straight on along the stony track.

(1) Continue straight on along the road and follow the path you took at the start in the opposite direction to reach the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk through semi-wooded countryside, charming villages, three beautiful churches, and a lively countryside teeming with birds, horses, sheep and cows, set against stunning scenery. Most of the walk is in the sun, though there are some shaded sections. No difficulty. One of the most beautiful walks I’ve done in the area around Nancy.
