Description of the walk

(S) From the campsite, join the D519 (Don’t forget to stock up on supplies!). Continue to the church and turn left to pass in front of it.

(1) Take the hairpin bend to the left to continue uphill. At a place called Les Haut de Golinhac, head right onto the footpath and continue along the grassy track heading south-west. At the junction, turn right towards Petit St Jacques. Continue to the junction with a small concrete cross.

(2) Continue straight on along the grassy path that runs alongside a meadow on your right.

(3) Cross the D904 with care and follow the signs for Conques, Les Albusquies. After about 400 m, turn right onto the path leading towards the pine forest. At the junction with the D42, turn right to enter the hamlet of Les Albusquies.

(4) Turn left at the large green bins and continue south-west, following the red and white markings of the GR® 65 to a picnic area.

(5) Turn left, then head west to the hamlet of Campagnac.

(6) Walk through the hamlet of Campagnac, then those of Soulié and Carboniés

(7) Ignore thePR® which branches off to the right and continue in the same direction to reach the village of Espeyrac on the D42. Continue left until you reach the town hall square.

(8) Turn left and walk past the church, following the signposts. Cross the D42 carefully and continue straight ahead along the small tarmac path leading downhill, marked by a green barrier. Pass the cemetery on your right.

(9) Cross the Daze stream and then the hamlet of La Bessade; after crossing the small bridge over the Borie stream, you will reach the junction with the D42.

(10) Turn right, walking carefully along the D42

(11) Leave the D42 and turn left onto the small path. Walk past a cemetery on your right and reach the village of Sénergues.

(12) Turn right and walk past the church. Turn left into Rue Louis le Pieux. At the next junction, continue along Rue de Saint-Cyprien towards Lunel. After a petrol station, at the start of a bend, head right to take the small path leading uphill to the right of the bus shelter. Cross the ring road then continue on the GR® 65 north-westwards to the D42.

(13) First turn right then left onto the D42 towards Malrieu on the road of the same name. An information sign indicates that you are on the Way of St James. Walk 500 m along the tarmac road before turning left onto a wide grassy path.

(14) At the junction with the D42, continue to the right for 2 km.

(15) Leave the D42 and head towards Saint-Marcel on the right. Walk through the hamlet of Saint-Marcel and continue to the Y-junction by the farm.

(16) Turn left heading south-west to descend through the woods towards the village of Conques and reach Chemin des Colombiers (Caution: the path consists of large pebbles and stone slabs which can make the descent very slippery!). Descend to the ‘give way’ sign.

(17) Cross the D42 carefully and continue straight ahead along the dead-end road. Pass in front of a stopover lodge on Rue Émile Roudier to arrive overlooking the Abbey Church of Saint-Foy.

(18) After the Bar Au Parvis, turn left to continue along Rue Charlemagne towards the Chapelle Saint-Roch. Continue downhill to reach the D42 via a small cobbled lane and arrive in front of Café Le Castellou.

(19) Cross the A901 carefully and continue along it towards Aurillac and the Beau Rivage campsite to find your campsite (E) located 400 m further on. (Please note that the campsite has changed its name and is now called Le temps d'une pause).

Worth a visit

Espreyrac: the former Gallo-Roman estate of Spariacus, which became Espeyrac, is mentioned in the 11th century in the cartulary of Conques Abbey. The main remains of the medieval village are its amphitheatre-like layout on a rocky promontory, steep streets and stairway alleys. The old church was completely rebuilt at the end of the 19th century.

Senergues: a beautiful square granite tower, its 15th–early 16th-century castle and its 16th-century church.

(E) Conques-en-Rouergues, the old town and the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy (18).

A beautiful route, even if there is a lot of tarmac.

Another lovely stage of the Camino de Santiago with stunning scenery.

At this time of year, the Camino de Santiago is quiet; there are no pilgrims about, and I can understand why as it was hot, but fortunately there are sections through the woods and we set off early in the cool of the morning.

Arriving in Conques is a feast for the eyes, even if it’s a bit of a physical challenge; it’s a very beautiful hike and the route is very well signposted.

Thank you
