Frasseta (Restonica) – A Sega Mountain Hut

First stage of the circular Two Valleys loop.

Thisfirst stage takes you deep into the heart of the Rotondu massif, along a wild and unspoilt route. From the Restonica Valley, famous for its alpine landscapes and crystal-clear waters, you’ll follow a path climbing through a Laricio pine forest to the sheepfolds of Cappellaccia. You will then continue towards the vast Alzu plateau, which offers a magnificent panorama of the surrounding peaks. The descent to the A Sega refuge, near the beautiful lake of the same name, marks the end of this day’s hike.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: La boucle des deux vallées de la Restonica au Tavignanu

Description of the walk

From May 2025: take the shuttle bus to the start of the trail (see details at the Centru di Corsica Tourist Office).

(S) Set off from the shuttle bus stop at Frasseta. The trail, marked in red, winds its way uphill through the pine trees. You’ll reach a junction with a signpost.

(1) Take the path on the right (towards Pianu Alzu). Follow the switchbacks uphill until you cross the Funtana Bianca stream.

(2) Just below the stream, you can drink water from the spring. Continue the climb towards the sheepfolds.

(3) Once you reach the Cappellaccia sheepfolds (elevation 1,647), the view towards Monte Rotondu on the Restonica side is stunning. Towards the far end of this valley (further to the right), you can also make out the Lombarducciu. A few metres further along the route, slightly lower down, a sign points towards the Alzu plateau. Behind it, in the background, you can enjoy the superb view of the Niolu mountains, particularly the summit of Paglia Orba. Continue along the path to the Alzu sheepfolds.

(4) At the Alzu sheepfolds, you may meet the shepherds during the summer months. Continue along the path towards ‘the forest house’ (an old building), then gradually descend towards the river, which you must then cross via a footbridge to reach the A Sega Refuge. From May to mid-October, the refuge warden is on duty and serves meals. Overnight stays must be booked via the PNRC website (see ‘Practical Information’)(E).

A charming route, but one that has to be earned. The climb is steep but well worth the effort. The descent to the refuge allows you to catch your breath, but you need to stay alert as the path is rocky.
