Description of the walk

Departure from the car park at Sochaux Town Hall. The sign is on a post on Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville in front of the war memorial. Route No. 5 is marked by two horizontal yellow and blue lines (URV standard, see Practical Information).

(S/E) Turn right onto Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville. Turn left and cross the car park between the Town Hall and the MJC.

(1) The Beer Museum is to the left of the car park. When you leave the car park, turn right onto Rue de la Poste. After 150 metres, at the pedestrian crossing, turn left and continue straight ahead. Cross the square and walk between the two buildings. Turn left onto Rue des Serres. At the T-junction, turn right and cross the car park towards a large oak tree. Walk along the side of the building. You will arrive at Place de l'Europe.

(2) On the left is the Peugeot Adventure Museum. Cross Rue de Pontarlier and turn right.
Turn left at the Maison du Prince. At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue des Chênes and walk 150 metres, then turn right onto the footpath that crosses a playground (Kiok). Continue in the same direction towards the south, crossing Rue Georges Cuvier twice, and continue towards the Citédo car park. Cross the street that leads to the sports complex, shopping centre and secondary school. You will see two footpaths in front of you; take the one on the left that leads to Citédo.

(3) At Citédo, go around the building on the left and follow the path that joins the greenway cycle path. Turn left onto the greenway and continue for 100 metres. Then turn left onto the Promenade de la Rêverie and continue for 400 metres. Walk along the left side of a boules court.

The promenade crosses a grove and the footpath turns right towards the three oak trees. This is the crossing of the old bed of the Allan with a conservation orchard. At the sign for "Rue des Chênes", continue straight ahead. Turn right onto Rue des Graviers and walk 100 m, then turn left onto the footpath between two buildings. Cross Rue des Vergers, turn right and walk 50 m, then turn left onto Rue du Général de Gaulle. At the traffic lights, cross the street and turn right.

(4) Cross Rue de Belfort and take Rue de Grand-Charmont for 400 metres. Halfway along on the left is the cemetery where the 125 victims of the 16 July 1943 bombing of the Peugeot factories, which actually hit the town of Sochaux, are buried.

At the top of the hill, turn left onto the path marked 'interdit aux véhicules sauf service' which leads to the fort, as indicated by route No. 5. The path is a little steep for a few metres. At the foot of the electricity pylon, follow the path into the woods. The path climbs, then there is a sharp left turn and a flat section.

Enjoy the magnificent view of the Belfort gap, Vieux-Charmont and Grand-Charmont at the end of the fence on the left. Continue along the path that turns right and climbs into the woods. Come out onto a meadow and follow the path that runs along the edge on the right-hand side. At the sign, head towards the viewpoint on the left.

(5) At the East viewpoint, enjoy the view of the Savoureuse Valley, the Vosges, etc. An orientation table describes the landscape. The view is clear in winter. Optionally, you can walk the 300-metre Caponnière route, marked in red.

After exploring, the 'Belvédère Est' sign indicates the direction of route No. 5 to the right for 30 metres. The 'sous belvédère' sign indicates to turn left. At the 'Caponnière' sign, continue straight ahead through the undergrowth and along the edge of the northern ditch for 600 metres. At the "Bois du Fort Lachaux" sign, turn left to arrive at a safety barrier. On the other side of the road, a sign for "Esplanade du Fort" invites you to turn left. Walk along a pasture in front of the leisure centre building and you will find a signpost. Follow route No. 5 to the right.

(6) Take a quick look around the farmyard. To do so, turn right at the bend and walk 5 metres, then take the path between the two fences. After your visit, turn around and return to the crossroads. Turn right onto route No. 5 via the grassy path. You will arrive near a white building and a sign for "dessus des escaliers" (top of the stairs).

Continue on route No. 5. Take the stairs on the left. At the bottom of the stairs, a sign indicates No. 5 on the right. Take Rue Sous Lachaux, then turn left onto Rue du Fort, which turns right. At the traffic lights, cross Rue d'Épinal and take Rue de l'Église straight ahead.

(7) Turn left onto Avenue du Général Leclerc, then right onto Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville and return to the town hall car park (S/E).

Hello

Hike done yesterday.
Small problem:
- many sections are currently under construction and closed to traffic, so there are quite a few detours.
- At certain points in the forest, I found myself having to turn back (signs were missing or there were lots of small paths with no signposts).

Apart from these minor issues, the hike was enjoyable. Don't forget to wear sturdy trousers (there are brambles in some places).

There aren't many people around (after 8 a.m., that's often the case), but it allows you to enjoy each peaceful spot and get some fresh air by going into the forest for a little while.

Enjoy your hike!
