Description of the walk

Park in the Parc de la Bouzaize car park, near the entrance to the Ferme de la Bouzaize.

(S/E) Cross Avenue du Parc and take the footpath opposite which runs alongside the Bouzaize, a small stream that rises in the park – well worth a look at the end of the walk. Walk straight ahead along the path, cross the Bouzaize via a bridge and turn immediately right onto Boulevard Georges Clémenceau. Take a few steps to the left to cross the boulevard using the pedestrian crossing, then continue slightly to the left to find the entrance to Square des Lions.

(1) Enter the park and walk round it on the left-hand side, aiming to find the main entrance flanked by two beautiful antique lion statues. Leave the park and head straight on to Place Marez, where you’ll see a fine statue of the inventor of the cinematograph, then take the street branching off to the right. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue Maizières. At the end of this street, turn left, then left again at the junction with Place Général Leclerc, where you’ll see a beautiful house with a turret on your right. You’ll find yourself facing the Basilica of Notre-Dame.

(2) As you leave the basilica, turn right onto Rue Paul Laneyrie , which runs alongside the building ; take note of a very pretty porch at a side entrance to the church, visible only if the main door is open. Continue straight on to Place Notre-Dame, then along the street that extends from it. At the T-junction, turn right, walk past the base of the Beaune Belfry, and you’ll arrive at a square featuring a statue of Gaspard Monge. Walk along the left-hand side of the square and you’ll reach Rue de Lorraine.

(3) Turn left, go straight on at the next junction with Rue Rousseau Deslandes; note a small statue of a winegrower saint in a niche of a beautiful old house at this junction. At the fork in the road, keep to the left, then take the first street on the right to seethe town hall, with the statue of ‘l’Éloquente’ in the courtyard. Retrace your steps along Rue de Lorraine and turn right, continuing tothe triumphal arch, the theatre and the former Chapelle de l’Oratoire.

(4) Climb the steps to the right of the theatre and continue along the Rempart de la Comédie, a walkway on the old ramparts. Leave the open-air theatre below on your left, pass the Tour Blondeau and head back down Rue du Château. On the left, a large wine estate occupies a former château.

(5) Turn right. At the junction you come to straight away, carry on straight ahead for a few dozen metres, still on Rue du Château, to see the mural commemorating the filming of the film *La Grande Vadrouille*. Retrace your steps and turn right into Rue Thiers. Take the second street on the right, Rue du Tribunal. Pass the old Courthouse building and continue to the end of the street, where you’ll arrive at a square with a fountain and the former Carmelite convent of Beaune on your right.

(6) Turn left onto Rue Vergnette de la Motte (shown as Delamotte on maps) and you’ll reach Petite Place Carnot, with a fountain on your left. The pedestrianised shopping streets branch off from this square. Turn right to cross the park at Place Carnot, where you’ll see a sculpture of a bull. Walk through the park, veering to the right at the far end, and exit to take Rue Pasumot opposite. This leads to Place de la Halle. Turn left, then left again opposite the façade of the Caisse d’Épargne, going round the market halls, to find the entrance to the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune (see Practical Information).

(7) On leaving the Hôtel-Dieu, turn right and head towards Rue de l’Hôtel-Dieu. Pass the Clos Saint-Bernardin on your left , which is reserved for sacramental wine. Immediately afterwards, enter the park on your right. You are now back on the old ramparts; walk above the Lavoir Saint-Jacques, pass the Tour des Cordeliers, then head back down a street and turn right. You will come out at Place Fleury, with an old house on your right.

(8) Turn slightly left to walk along the square, then take the first street on the left (one-way). Ignore Rue Vivant Gardin on your right, then turn right onto Rempart des Dames – another walk along the old ramparts. Pass the Tour des Dames, head back down to find yourself facing the Square des Lions. Cross the avenue (Avenue de la République) to enter the park and turn left to find the entrance you used at the start of the walk.

(1) Then retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there: turn left, cross the boulevard, continue to the left and follow the Bouzaize to the right until you reach the Parc de la Bouzaize car park.

(S/E) I suggest finishing with a short circular loop through the park, passing by the Source de la Bouzaize.
