Étang Fourcat - Port de Caraussans

More magnificent lakes are on the agenda, with the added bonus of a short chairlift ride on the Andorran side to rest your legs before the descent to L'Étang de Soulcem, which is very challenging in the last section.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of Pic de Malcaras and its lakes

Description of the walk

Leave the Étang de la Goueille bivouac site and return to the path that leads due east to Port de La Goueille.

(1) Do not go in this direction, but turn right and join the path that heads south on the left and leads to Port de l'Albeille. After a fairly steep climb, the path flattens out in the upper valley and you walk between sparse grass and boulders.

As you pass, admire the two Étangs de l'Albeille lakes, which are below on the left.

Follow the cairns, which are quite numerous in this area, and head for Port de l'Albeille, clearly visible at the bottom of the mountain cirque. Continue southwards on the path, which levels out and joins the Port (2601m).

(2) Begin the descent, which is steep at first, with a series of short hairpin bends in the scree, then becomes gentler at two small ponds on the left. On the right, you will soon see the Estany de Tristagne in its basin. Magnificent...

The path heads south and passes along a balcony above Estany del Mig. Continue until you reach the shores of Estany Primer, very elegant in its small grassy basin.

(3) Turn 180° to the right, walk along the bank and follow the path which heads south-west and then passes a cliff, from where you can see a car park and several buildings, including a restaurant, next to the departure point of the chairlift that you will take. The pastoral site is very beautiful.

Descend to the start of the chairlift, which climbs north-west towards the ridge above Estany de Creussans (E).

Notes

There is no water source before arriving at the chairlifts and car park above the Arcalis ski resort in Andorra. There is a bar and restaurant next to the Creussans chairlift departure point.

Worth a visit

Take the time to admire the Tristagne lakes, if possible early in the morning, before the arrival of the crowds of tourists who arrive by car and walk up to the lakes in 30 minutes from the car park.

We didn't do exactly this hike, but a circular around Soulcem Pond (Orris du Carla), Port de Rat, Col de l'Albeille, overnight stay at the Fourcat refuge and return via the Picot ponds... It was a difficult hike due to the cumulative elevation gain and, above all, the numerous long sections of scree with large rocks and steep slopes with two handrails on the second day of the route. That said, the scenery is superb!

(Continued)
On the second day of the hike, we are still ready to continue. The first part consists of following a hilly path through the wild mountains. It is beautiful, calm, cool and pure, until we reach the first hill to climb. The path becomes steep (less so than the old one, though), but we can see our destination, which motivates us. When we reach the pass, we admire the two valleys stretching out on either side and brace ourselves for the next descent. It is very steep and dangerous, and we are forced to slide down the snow that inevitably covers the path for about thirty metres. As a result, we hurt ourselves (one of us scrapes his knee) and get wet... In short, it's time to take a break. The rest of the path is flat, and we admire with satisfaction the distance we have covered behind us. Whereas we hadn't met anyone up to that point, we now encounter crowds of families coming from the ski resort.
A difficult hike, dangerous in places, but not too tiring.
