Port de Caraussans - Étang de Soulcem

After our chairlift ride, we descend towards the Soulcem lake on the Ariège side. We enjoy the beauty of this glacial valley, the Soulcem lake, the Mérens horses grazing freely, not to mention the numerous orris that line the route. It is a wonderful but particularly challenging end to the hike between the Caraussans lake and the Soulcem trail.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of Pic de Malcaras and its lakes

Description of the walk

The chairlift that passes over the Estany de Creussans drops us off on the ridge. Turn left and walk along the almost flat path to quickly reach the Port de Caraussans.

(1) Turn right and descend. You will see the Étang de Caraussans, a very long but charming lake. The path, which is quite steep at first, flattens out when it reaches the basin of the lake, which is on your right. Walk along the lake and follow the path westwards, which first descends into a small grassy valley, crosses the stream and then enters a narrow gorge where the slope becomes extremely steep (the route on the IGN map is incorrect here).

(2) Below, you can see the beautiful glacial valley of the Étang de Soulcem and its wide stream winding lazily along. Stay alert and pay close attention on this very steep and difficult section, especially if you are carrying a heavy rucksack.

Reach a second narrow passage that descends a small rocky gorge and also requires a great deal of attention.

(3) Once you have crossed this passage, turn right onto the path and continue downhill, on a gentler slope, to reach the wide dirt track in the Soulcem valley.

(4) Turn right onto this track and follow the Soulcem stream, admiring the Labinas waterfall as you go. Don't forget to turn around often to enjoy the beauty of the glacial cirque, enclosed by the imposing Pic de Médecourbe. After a few hairpin bends, you will reach the new car park at Orris du Carla, which is well worth a visit.

(5) Continue along the track, which is in very good condition and accessible to vehicles, running alongside the Étang de Soulcem lake, whose deep blue colour is a sight to behold. It's a long way to the dam! Stop for a moment to look at the strange Pic de la Madelon opposite, on the other side of the lake. You will then arrive at the Soulcem dam and, 150 metres further on, at the starting point from the previous day where your car is waiting (E).

Notes

There are no water sources, except for several streams, but their sanitary quality cannot be guaranteed.

As on the previous day, you will need good hiking boots with Vibram soles if possible, which provide good ankle support. Walking poles are also very useful.

This hike is classified as difficult because the section between the Caraussans Pond and the Soulcem Valley is very steep and puts a lot of strain on the legs. It is advisable to take all the usual precautions.

Worth a visit

Enjoy the Soulcem glacial valley and the Mérens horses, which are numerous in the summer season.
Visit the Orris du Carla, at the car park above the Soulcem lake.

(Continued) We get off the chairlift and set off again. The first part of the trail is a simple descent, not too steep, on dirt paths.
The second part is very difficult and dangerous. We descend directly into the gorge of the waterfall (without poles and carrying our very heavy rucksacks). The descent is truly impressive and very steep. After two days of walking, our bodies are weakened, and we really suffer on this part of the trail. So don't underestimate this descent, believe us!
At the end of this climb, we only have an hour's walk left, on almost flat ground, before we reach our starting point.
Even though we suffered a little during these two days, we are proud to have completed this hike, which will remain an unforgettable adventure in my Pyrenees!
