Fage Belle lake

Snowshoe hike from the Monts d'Olmes resort.

We did this hike on a Friday in January, outside of school holidays, which was great. It's likely to be a bit busier during school holidays or at weekends!
If possible, choose a day with clear weather. It would be a shame to miss the view.

Description of the walk

The hike is very well marked (purple signs with a picture of a snowshoe) from the resort. The starting point is next to the snow groomer hangar to the south-east of the resort.

(S/E) From the resort, continue along the ski slope until you reach a fork.

(1) Leave the ski slope on the right, climb up and follow the trail on the left. Further on, turn left. Then cross a ski slope for the first time.

(2) Continue and then cross it a second time.

(3) Follow the path, then keep left twice to reach the pond. When you arrive at Étang de Face Belle, you will find two picnic tables (there is even a makeshift barbecue!) with a very pleasant view in good weather.
Do not venture onto the frozen lake, even if it looks solid!

(4) Climb a little higher to the right for a view of the ski slopes.

(5) You have two options:
- either turn back to return to the arrival point at the ponds, and then take the trail again,
- or cut "off-piste" to the left to rejoin the trail at the point along the red "Escapade" trail. This is the route suggested here. Once you have reached the path you took on the way up, return to the centre of the resort (S/E) by following the route in reverse.

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,484 m - Resort centre
  2. 1 : km 0.24 - alt. 1,500 m - Junction with the ski slope
  3. 2 : km 1.43 - alt. 1,635 m - Crossing the ski slope
  4. 3 : km 1.6 - alt. 1,659 m - Crossing the ski slope
  5. 4 : km 2.23 - alt. 1,744 m - Picnic area
  6. 5 : km 2.36 - alt. 1,756 m - Picnic area and viewpoint
  7. S/E : km 4.53 - alt. 1,484 m - Resort centre

Notes

You can park in one of the resort's three car parks.
The closest to the start is the highest one, the number changes depending on the maps on the website, it is P1.
If you need to hire snowshoes, you will have to go back down to the centre of the resort anyway. It is a small resort, so you won't have to walk far.

Worth a visit

Magnificent views on a clear day.

Very easy to find your way around, thanks to the station's signage. It was a sunny Sunday during the holidays, so there were lots of people and no parking spaces available within 500 metres of the departure point. Fortunately, there were staff on hand to direct people to available spaces.
