Head to the Pla dels Avellans car park. This car park is accessible in winter once the snow has been cleared from the restricted road.
(S) Head north-west along the snow-covered road. After 250 m, take the path on the right into the woods and climb north-west. You’ll soon rejoin the road at a left-hand bend, but continue climbing through the woods, still heading north-west. Rejoin the snow-covered road and follow it now (as to the right is the mountain and to the left is the descent towards the river and the penstock). Follow this snow-covered road, cutting across all the bends by following the telephone poles.
(1) At around 1,890 m, it becomes impossible to cut across; you must then simply follow this snow-covered road. Look down over the torrent and, to the left in the distance, the penstock descending from Les Bouillouses. Reach a large left-hand bend at around 1,990 m (at this bend, a sign on the right indicates the direction of L’Estany d’Aude). Continue along the road heading south-west. You will reach a large bend to the right. The road then turns north-west.
(2) At the next left-hand bend, leave this road and head up to the right into the forest. This path overlooks and runs alongside the road.
(3) After 500 m, you arrive above the chalets and accommodation at Les Bouillouses. Climb up to the dam and cross it. You are now at an altitude of 2,000 m. You can take a well-deserved rest with a snack whilst enjoying this stunning view.
(4) At the end of the dam, head left, due south, with the Roc de La Calma chairlift in your sights.
(5) After 1,600 m, take a wide curve to climb above the Estany de La Pradella. Descend towards the lake by turning right and arrive at a shelter.
(6) Yellow markings are present. Take care to go round the lake on the right, keeping well clear of the frozen and snow-covered banks. Continue eastwards for 400 m from the shelter and leave the red and whiteGR®®10markings.
(7) Head left, continuing to follow the edge of the lake.
(8) Reach Estany Negre and go round this pond on the right, staying as close as possible to the forest. At the end of the pond, climb a small rise and descend into a steep gully for 30 m. Follow the stream on the right bank for about 150 m
(9) Cross it (heading due north). Then continue eastwards. Use the few yellow markings on the trees for guidance. From the point where you cross the stream, the path descends steeply through the valleys.
(10) When you reach the torrent (La Têt: which is actually a river), turn right, following a fence that runs alongside La Têt. Cross the Ruisseau de la Pradeille, which flows from Estany Negre, and continue following this fence. Keep following La Têt until you reach a mountain pasture (La Muntanya) at the foot of a chairlift.
(11) Take the bridge on the left which crosses the Têt and leads you back to the Pla dels Avellans car park.
