Hermitage of St-Jean du Puy and Pas de la Couelle

This is a hike that reaches a height of 648 metres, with lovely views. There may be mist. This hike features some lovely single tracks, but also a good stretch of tarmac road; however, it is a hike without any particular significant difficulty.

Description of the walk

Park in the two-space car park just before the forest gate.

(S/E) Go through the forest gate and take the path that climbs. Pass water tank 598 and arrive at a bend. Take the path on the left that descends. Go straight on and arrive at a junction with a water tank (number 599). Set off from the side of the tank, on the right, onto the path that climbs, marked in white and red.

(1) A little further on is a wayside shrine. Continue until you reach a junction with a cairn in the middle. Turn left, staying on the path marked in white and red. Cross the wide RE 122 path. Follow it to the left. It turns into a tarmac path, then the tarmac gradually disappears. You will then reach a junction with a small path leading off to the right.

(2) Take this path and continue straight on, following its course, until you reach a rectangular well with a yellow Y-shaped signpost. Continue to the right, along the path that climbs. It is concrete and is clearly marked in yellow, white and red. Pass through a forest gate, then reach a junction and follow the path marked in white and red to the left, to go round the Hermitage of Saint-Jean du Puits, which you can visit. There is a lovely viewpoint as you go round it, by the way.

(3) Continue, then look out for a sign pointing to the toilets and a second path branching off to the left. Take this path branching off to the left, heading downhill and passing five steps.

(4) At the junction with a signpost, turn left towards Saint-Zacharie. This is a path that descends quite steeply. You’ll cross a small path on the right that goes uphill: continue down the path. On the left, at the end of the descent, you’ll find yourself in a pleasant little wood with a much more passable path. You’ll cross a small path branching off to the right which isn’t shown on the map: stay on the path marked in white and red.

(5) At the junction, turn left, then right onto the path which widens. You’ll reach a small clearing with a forest chain, and continue along the path. There’s a pretty little stone house on the right. Pass in front of a field of olive trees on terraces, and arrive at the continuation of a tarmac road. Continue downhill.

(6) At the junction, near a concrete electricity pylon on the right, there is a path: take this one. It is a path that climbs straight up and runs alongside a green wire fence on the left. You will very quickly reach a tarmac road which you must follow to the right, climbing, until you cross a small bridge.

(7) At the end of the bridge, there is a path leading off to the left: leave the tarmac and take this small path. A few trees, lying across the path, are easy to get round. You will need to step over three large branches of dead wood that appear to be blocking the way.

(8) At the junction, turn right to cross, a few metres further on, the tarmac road “Route de Saint-Zacharie”. Follow it to the left, going uphill. Pass cistern 614, located on the left.

(9) At the Col du Pas de la Couelle, at an altitude of 525 metres, continue to the right at the signpost, along a small path marked in yellow and red. It climbs through lovely woodland. At the end of the climb, the path splits in two: take the left-hand route marked in yellow and red to reach the Col de Ribièrre. Pass it without really noticing, then reach the highest point of the route, at an altitude of 648 metres. There are lovely views. Continue to follow the yellow and red markings.

(10) At the junction, veer left, leaving the Yellow and Red path, which continues straight on. Cross a path and continue straight on until you reach a DFCI track. Follow it to the right and, a few metres further on, look out for the two paths branching off to the left. Follow the narrowest one furthest to the left: it’s a lovely single track through the woodland. When you reach the path you took on the way out, follow it to the left, in the opposite direction, to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Suggested by: A.M.I.S Rando Aubagne

Important: at Pas de la Couelle (9) there is a car park with five to six spaces for those who wish to start the circular route from this point. It is much easier to access and there are more spaces.
