Amidst apple trees and ponds in Saint-Palais

A lovely circular route starting from Saint-Palais (Cher), a village known for its pottery market and apple orchards. It mainly follows paths through woodland and takes you through unspoilt countryside dotted with ponds.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the church in Saint-Palais.

(S/E) Turn your back on the church and take the Route de Grangeneuve for about 280 m.

(1) Turn left, then immediately turn right onto the dirt track running diagonally past the SCEA premises. Continue along the main track between the apple orchards.

(2) Keep left, following the trees. The path descends into a wood and reaches a fork.

(3) Take the small path opposite, on the left, which climbs through the woods and leads to the Colombier farm.

(4) Cross the small road and follow the grassy path opposite. Turn right immediately to head down into the woods. Continue along the path and, at a fork, turn left to reach the RD25.

(5) Follow the road to the left with care for about 540 m and pass in front of the Gros Chêne houses.

(6) Take the path on the right which descends into the woods and passes close to some ponds on the right-hand side. Continue further along the edge of the woods to reach a four-way junction.

(7) Turn right and continue along the path for about 300 m to reach the RD20. Turn left and follow it carefully to the crossroads at the hamlet of La Caroline.

(8) Take a straight, grassy path that veers diagonally to the left. Continue straight ahead, cross the D116 with care at Saint-Rémy and follow the path opposite to the crossroads.

(9) Continue straight on, passing between the ponds, cross the Distelles junction and follow the path alongside more ponds on your right. As you approach the houses, the path turns left to reach the hamlet of La Grande Noue.

(10) At the end of the path, take the road on the right to the nearby crossroads, then follow the road to the left.

(11) When you reach a pond, take the path immediately to the left of it and follow it. At the end, turn right onto a path that climbs up towards the RD116.

(12) Follow the road to the right for about a hundred metres, then take the path on the left. Cross the apple orchards and continue straight on to reach Saint Palais. Turn right onto Route de Grangeneuve to return to the church (S/E).

A very pleasant walk, especially in fine weather, with shaded sections through the woodland, well-marked paths, and very little elevation gain.

A pleasant route, but probably more so in good weather than at the end of November in drizzly rain (slippery ground). A route through the countryside without passing through any villages, very natural... No major difficulties...

We did this hike on horseback, but we’ll be doing it on foot very soon;
At point 11, we went straight on to avoid going through the village
The sunken paths were very well maintained, with plenty of orchards; it was lovely despite the slippery ground
