Description of the walk

Car park at Saint-Pierre-Lafeuille Town Hall.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head straight ahead. Cross the D820 via the pedestrian crossing. Take the D47 towards Maxou for 250 m.

(1) At the sign for Chemin de Cantegor, head straight ahead and then turn right down the small path.
At the bottom of this descent, at the junction, turn right and then right again after 20 m. Continue straight on, up the hill to the tarmac road, which you follow to the left and then straight on a little further.
Walk past the campsite and continue straight ahead, then turn right after about 200 m onto Chemin de la Fontaine. You will pass through the hamlet of Mas de la Combe; take a moment to admire the local architecture: stone houses and a bread oven.

(2) When you reach the Fontaine du Mas de Lacombe, take a break in this peaceful and pleasant spot.
Continue down the slope.

(3) At the bottom, keep right and ignore the path branching off to the right. A sign points out a point of interest: an old path marked by large flat stones set upright on one side.
After admiring this marvellous man-made feature, rejoin the path and continue straight ahead. Ignore the paths branching off to the right.

(4) Follow the small valley to the left until you reach the valley of the Ruisseau de Maxou, which you should follow; at the first junction, turn left and continue to the village of Maxou.
Admire a small dry-stone pond on your left. Take the opportunity to visit the magnificent 11th- and 12th-century Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. A little further on, leave the small path on your left.

(5) Continue to the D47; you are now in the village square, which you must cross to reach the two large, beautiful houses opposite. Continue along Rue du Roy, then along Rue du Mas de Durou.
After a few hundred metres, take the grassy path that climbs slightly. At the next fork, turn right.

(6) You will come to a wash house fed by a spring above, part of the ruins situated right next to it which were once the residence of the Lord of Revel (caution: do not approach this building due to the risk of rockfalls).
After the ruins, take the stony climb and, after 20 m, at the top, continue to the right then straight on, ignoring the path to the right 200 m further on. Walk alongside the pine forest, passing the junction.

(7) Turn left immediately afterwards.
At the next fork, take the small path straight ahead on the left and begin the descent carefully.

(8) At the end of the stony path, turn left. Follow the bottom of the hill to the tarmac road.

(9) Continue straight on along this road and, after 200 m, take the dirt track on the right. Follow it until you rejoin the tarmac road, which leads to the village (S/E).

Worth a visit

Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption (Maxou)
The nave dates from the late 11th to early 12th century. The apse features six blind arcades, quite unique in the Quercy region, and three narrow, high-set windows, which bear witness to the defensive role the church may have played in the Middle Ages. More recent additions include the north chapel, which was added during an extension in the early 16th century, and the bell tower, built in the 19th century. The lintel above the entrance bears the date 1842.

Ruins of Revel.
Dating from the 13th century – this may have been the seigneurial residence of the Revel family: Pierre de Revel, co-lord of Calamane and Maxou, and ordinary judge of the pariage of the town of Cahors.
From this period, the ground floor of the north façade remains, featuring a pointed arch doorway, a light well and arrowslits, as well as, probably, the vaulted lower hall on the east side.
The building was subsequently altered in the 17th century (cross-bar window; vault of the lower hall) and, most notably, in the 19th century, when it appears on the 1831 land register.

The signposting on the ground isn't great, particularly when it comes to finding the path, as the signpost was covered in branches and couldn't be seen.

A lovely walk, though a bit more challenging than indicated due to some steep sections on rocky terrain at point 7: the descent is very long over loose stones. The route is poorly signposted and the path is poorly maintained. It seems that the directions at point 5 – “at the next fork, turn right” – are no longer accurate; we couldn’t find the path, and a fence blocked our way. We continued along the narrow path straight ahead and, at the end of it, turned sharp right and walked straight on to reach the 6 without seeing the fountain or the ruins, adding 1 km to the walk. The final stretch along the road is indeed unpleasant. Despite all that, it’s a lovely walk through forest and across plateaus.

A lovely, easy walk. There are some beautiful and interesting sights to see: a wash house, springs, castle ruins, a pine forest, and the quiet little village of Maxou. You do have to walk 100 metres there and back along a busy road, but this is just to get to the car park. I don’t think you can park safely any further away.
All in all, I recommend this walk

It’s a shame we have to end up right next to the main road.

An easy, varied route with some lovely buildings to see – very enjoyable. Just two issues with the route: (1) “head straight ahead” is a bit confusing: straight ahead of what? The path is just behind the “Chemin de Cantegor” sign on the right. Another point of confusion: (4): Follow the small valley to the left – this is quite confusing; perhaps clarify by saying “turn left right at the bottom of the path when you reach valley level”. That’s it, just two minor details; the rest is perfect.
