A short walk between two neighbouring chapels, one in the valley near a small hamlet and the other perched on a rocky outcrop.

Description of the walk

Access: from Beaumont-du-Ventoux, head towards the hamlet of Les Valettes (north-east) via the D153. Go round the hamlet and continue along this road. At a transformer, turn right towards the hamlet of Sainte-Marguerite.
Parking is available between the cemetery and Sainte-Marguerite Chapel.

(S/E) With your back to the cemetery, follow the road opposite. At the first junction (cross), turn right and ignore the first road on the right. You will take this on the way back. Follow the small road towards the hamlet of Les Alazards.

(1) Turn right to cross through the hamlet, noting a wash house on the left (GR®4signposting to the chapel)

(2) After the last houses, turn left and begin a steep climb up a stony path. With a few hairpin bends, this path takes you up 250m to reach the little Saint-Sidoine Chapel and its cross.

(3) From up here, you can see the hamlet where you started and its chapel, as well as the Ouvèze valley.
Descend carefully, crossing the hamlet of Les Alezards.

(1) Turn left and follow the route you took on the way up. Turn left onto the small road leading up to the hamlet of Sainte-Marguerite. At the highest point, turn right, cross the hamlet, go round the small chapel and return to the starting point (S/E).

A lovely walk! The climb is a bit steep, just like the descent, but it’s doable!!!
Beautiful scenery... and a very pretty little chapel, St Sidoine

You’ll follow a section of the GR4 for this lovely walk.
Once you’ve passed the hamlet of Les Alazards, expect a fairly steep climb, but the reward is at the top:
On a clear day, there is a panoramic view to the north: you can make out the Pre-Alps and the Baronnies.
From the Saint-Sidoine chapel, you can see the Lance massif and Montagne d’Angèle 15–20 km away to the right.
As another hiker mentioned, it’s best to continue along the GR4 to the right and complete a circular route to reach Sainte Marguerite.
Good high-top boots are essential to navigate the numerous scree slopes, due to erosion.
And indeed, as you approach the end, just before reaching the hamlet of Sainte Marguerite, you have to pass through a mini-tunnel of brambles and vegetation for about 30 metres: don’t go through there wearing a Hermès scarf – this section really needs clearing with a machete.

A lovely walk that we turned into a circular route by continuing along the GR4 after the Chapelle Saint Sidoine, then heading back down to the starting point via a path (less steep than the one going up, which is better) near the old sheepfolds. You can see the outlines of the buildings on the map. The end of the path is quite overgrown before reaching the houses, but it’s manageable, even with our three children aged between 10 and 4.
